Opened this spring, the Graduate Berkeley is the newest addition to the Graduate Hotels brand launched three years ago in university-anchored cities across the country like Lincoln, Nebraska; Charlottesville, Virginia; and Oxford, Mississippi. Located one block from the UC Berkeley campus, the hotel occupies the grounds of the former Hotel Durant, which first opened its doors in 1928 and was named for the college’s founder, Henry Durant.
After renovations, the hotel’s grand opening revealed restored vintage furniture and a collegiate vibe with tchotchkes linked to the university and photos of famous alumni. Decorated with a mix of preppy plaids, patterned pillows and unique artwork, lodgings here feel more like a friend’s guest room than a hotel.
Accommodations include free Wi-Fi, desks, refrigerators, coffeemakers and HD TVs with the choice of one queen, one king or two double beds. Upgraded rooms offer sofa beds, views of the campus clock tower or San Francisco Bay and the option to adjoin with neighboring rooms as a family pied-à-terre. The hotel welcomes pets for an additional $20 per night.
Guests can explore Berkeley on complimentary loaner bicycles and have 24-hour access to the property’s fitness center. The on-site restaurant, Henry’s, serves American comfort foods for breakfast and dinner daily. The hotel is a 10-minute walk from the shops and restaurants of Shattuck Avenue, 4 miles from Indian Rock Park and 6 miles from Jack London Square.
