Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can explore Portland Bill lighthouse for great views of the English Channel or join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach, for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle beach that connects Portland to the maindland, is around and hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, am observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 Jun), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 Jun), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 Jul). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

Strange location for a hotel but pleasantly surprised when you enter. Very corporate type hotel. Nice restaurant considering there are limited options elsewhere (have to drive out). Room is clean, nicely decorated and roomy. There was a small issue with the booking-- Travel Zoo's booking included full breakfast did not match Maritime Hotel's continental breakfast. However, Maritime Hotel accepted the 'mistake' and wavered the charges. Left an otherwise perfect holiday with a very minor uncomfortable feeling when we had to challenge the additional charges. That said, it was good customer service.

Problem over toaster. They kept telling us not to put toast through again as it might set fire but once just made it very slightly crisp but could not be described as toast so I did not bother second day as I do not like bread but enjoy toast. Sausages at breakfast seemed overdone

Curious hotel - amazing situation but right next to a secondary school!. Gave the impression of having had a lot of money spent on furnishings but with nothing now left over for maintenance, hence bathroom cupboard badly in need of repair, expensive carpet badly stained etc. Impressive main door and reception but, if you had a car (pretty well everyone), the car park was round the back and you entered by the back door which was right next to the rubbish skips and had loads of dirty rubbish blowing around the doorway. Breakfast was ok but a bit hit and miss - you never knew how many sausages/rashers of bacon you were going to get and it was all piled onto a small plate! Why not buy some larger plates and make it look classy? On our last day there were no croissants and no boiled eggs and, for those opting for the continental breakfast there was no ham or cheese on any day. Having said that it was good value for what we paid and we would only not return because we don't want to stay on Portland again. One final point - why was the mirror positioned carefully on the bedroom wall and the someone put the tv right in front of it??!! I think that with a little bit of effort and a little bit of cash the hotel could improve enormously.

Bedroom along with Portland Bill fabulous, decent size with lovely bathroom along with supplied toiletries. Dining/Breakfast room really good overlooking coast and lighthouses, food excellent and would recommend making a booking with inclusive breakfast, so pleased we did.

Take NO notice of grim outside of building, inside is VERY well appointed and welcoming. Can only assume building origins are possibly from large Naval presence on Portland in the past🤔

The only gripe was the dog owners who thought leaving the dog in the room barking while having breakfast and dinner was ok when it just created a lot of noise, plus dog owners who took their dogs to public areas like the roof terrace without picking up their dogs poo!

The general atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxing. The staff were very pleasant. The evening meal was very good.

This was a dog friendly hotel and I was very impressed with the way they dealt with this. Dogs were not allowed in the restaurant, but they had a very pleasant bar area where dog owners could eat accompanied by their dogs. I would recommend for dog owners.

Cold hotel, no heating in room, except a free standing oil filled radiator, very small potions with the food, our starter and main course tiny, I overheard one person saying about his breakfast, is this a starter?
