Overview

The Feathers Hotel is a boutique 4-star property in the market town of Woodstock, which is on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is 15 minutes' drive from Oxford. The hotel was converted from seven separate 17th-century houses and features open log fires, antique furniture and traditional English furnishings.

This "intimate and unique hotel" (The AA) is a few minutes' walk from the gates of Blenheim Palace -- a 17th-century stately home, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill (open daily).

There is a direct bus from Woodstock to Oxford, which takes around 30 minutes (this is often easier than driving into the city). There, you can explore the city's "rich history, tradition and energetic academic life" (Lonely Planet), including its famous university colleges and museums. Stratford-upon-Avon -- the birthplace of Shakespeare -- is a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

You can learn about local history, art, archaeology, landscape and wildlife by visiting The Oxfordshire Museum, two minutes' walk from the hotel (free; open Tuesday-Sunday).

Featured in Harper's Bazaar and Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay, The Feathers Hotel has free-standing baths, an al fresco terrace and one of the world's largest collections of gins. There is also a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant with a modern British menu.

According to The AA, "individually styled bedrooms are appointed to a high standard". As the hotel comprises seven townhouses, some rooms are located in an adjacent building to the main part of the hotel. Wi-Fi is free.

Due to adverse weather across the country we were unable to complete our journey, having contacted reception at the feathers to advise we advised of our situation ie stranded in flooding and asked if it was possible to rebook our stay. Flat answer of No. asked to speak to the general manager who wasn’t available, have tried twice since and is still not available, have left our details for a call back but don’t hold out much hope. There are two types of establishment, those who care and those who don’t, the feathers falls into the latter. This was a special occasion for us and although ruined by the weather. The feathers showed no empathy

Great hotel in a great location. It's quite an old building so the rooms were a little quirky with very narrow staircases. The location was excellent as were the staff and the food so overall highly recommended.

Very nice hotel with a lovely atmosphere tastefully decorated to a high quality and very quirky in places. The staff deserve a mention from reception staff throughout were all very very attentive and professional, making our stay a very enjoyable experience.

Worth a mention is definitely the food. We had breakfast and evening meal on two occasions. The choice at breakfast was excellent and coupled with the quality of the food ensured a great start to the day. Our evening meal was also excellent with again a great choice on the menu. The quality of the food and quantity was very pleasing.
