The Feathers Hotel is a boutique 4-star property in the market town of Woodstock on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Oxford. The hotel was converted from seven separate 17th-century houses and features open log fires, antique furniture and traditional English furnishings.

This "intimate and unique hotel" (The AA) is a few minutes' walk from the gates of Blenheim Palace -- a 17th-century stately home, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill (open daily).

There is a direct bus from Woodstock to Oxford, which takes around 30 minutes (this is often easier than driving into the city). Here, you can explore the city's "rich history, tradition and energetic academic life" (Lonely Planet), including its famous university colleges and museums. Stratford-upon-Avon -- the birthplace of Shakespeare -- is a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

You can learn about local history, art, archaeology, landscape and wildlife by visiting The Oxfordshire Museum, two minutes' walk from the hotel (free; open Tuesday-Sunday).

Featured in Harper's Bazaar and Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay, The Feathers Hotel has free-standing baths, an al fresco terrace and one of the world's largest collections of gins. There is also a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant with a modern British menu.

According to The AA, "individually styled bedrooms are appointed to a high standard and are furnished with attractive period and reproduction furniture". As the hotel is comprised of seven townhouses, some rooms are located in an adjacent building to the main part of the hotel. Wi-Fi is free.

Rather disappointed by the room....am sure it was not a “superior “ as expected when booking this deal, very dark & gloomy, despite being clean...up a steep climb of stairs to top floor. ( Room 42) However, we had good sleep quality ,& bathroom had a bath & shower, excellent towels, plenty of hot water. Great staff....excellent food. Looks much better inside than the outside.

Very helpful polite staff, in reception,& dining room. Delicious complimentary G&T. Parking on street, but not a problem.....very quiet area,rd not busy. Very good location, for visiting Blenheim Palace, & Oxford.

Good. Staff very good. Access to rooms could be difficult for older guests but that is to be expected in such an old building.

We think that some people would find the stairs to Room 55 very difficult. Also parking wasn’t always easy. However the staff were extremely attentive and efficient, and the food was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay and wish we had booked a third night.

A very pleasant stay with above average food. Parking is very limited. The shower/bath water control is not straightforward and some written guidance would have been appreciated (room 29).

We arrived in Woodstock and struggled to find a parking space. There is a long stay car park which I'd recommend if you're struggling to park. After that check in was swift, we enjoyed a couple of G&Ts, visited various bars around Woodstock, returned and had a nice dinner. The next morning we enjoyed a lovely full English prior to departing at midday. A fantastic stay, and we'll definitely be returning.

Overall, fantastic value for money and location is perfect. Reception staff not very engaging and waiting staff sloppy. Some areas of the bedroom were positively dirty and the approach to it via an external door was a bit strange. However, we did enjoy our stay but it did not compare favourably with our previous stay there last year.
