Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (an extra £22.50 per person). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property is "one of the greenest hotels in the country, with a host of different eco-friendly systems in place" (The AA). It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17 and the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

Rooms are "well-appointed and presented with quality beds, décor and flooring as standard" (The AA). Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

I have had to pay a lot more money for hotels that didn’t come up to the standards of this one. I can’t praise it highly enough and would definitely recommend it.

Location, scenery, hotel's individual outlook on sustainability, choice we made ( based on reviews) of the outside larger rooms ( weather was nice so a bonus), small hotel.

Loved the quirkiness and values of this hotel. Our only hopefully constructive feedback was that the deal entailed an 8 course taster menu and whilst we were advised on check in at about 3/4pm that this typically took an hour and a half to two hours, that our sense was our request that an 8pm booking was quite late as the dining room was going to be quiet and few other diners were likely to be present. We stuck to our preference as it was a Saturday night but the first course was put down before we had even ordered drinks. This wasn't great and we twice slowed things down by leaving food on the plate/ going to the loo but still had had 4 courses in 40 minutes. This spoiled it as we felt under pressure and we left the dining area just after 2 hours. ( 10 pm so not late for a Saturday). That was our only criticism and we would definitely go back but if you lived local and fancy a nice meal/ drink, why would you spend 50 quid a head to be rushed out. We ate Sunday evening instead at the other local pub ( the black bull) and very much enjoyed what we had food/service wise and as well as spreading the tourist currency, it was actually a more relaxing meal. Friendly staff and our experience of Battlesteads was that the hospitality/ welcome varied.

I don’t think the main picture does it justice..I was expecting a quaint ,perhaps ‘ tired ‘ place but the hotel is vibrant, clean ,chic in a rural ‘ quaint ‘ setting.I don’t often recommend hotels but have no hesitation in recommending to friends and family.

Lovely hotel overall - ambience etc. Nice to have proper coffee and tea in the room. Food very good. Many fresh ingredients from their own extensive kitchen garden. Staff very friendly and attentive without being stuffy and fussy.

The standard rooms in the main building were a bit small (probably constrained by the age and configuration of the old building). The lodges looked fabulous Of the hotel (but not included in the offer!)

Excellent staff, very friendly and helpful. Good food, prompt service. Lodge was excellent as was the main hotel. Good parking provisions.

My only negative comment is being charged £6 for two coffees after the taster menu. Left a slightly bad taste on checkout.
