"View from room not what we would choose as it over looked a roof. Think it was the lounge to the bar. Otherwise would have given it a five star. It’ a great place and liked it because it is so into the environment. Hand made lotions and potions for bathrooms hand made in the Lake District . No small plastic bottles they refill the containers and have a bio mass central heating boiler which my husband was very impressed with. I could go on but busy day ahead."

Overview

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (supplements apply). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property has impressive eco-friendly credentials. It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17, the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, the Sustainable Business Award in the 2019 Catey Awards, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

We've also negotiated a tasting-menu meal for two, for £39.

Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

We loved everything about the hotel. Our room was a standard and felt a little small but large enough for a short stay. It had been beautifully prepared and gave us all we needed. It looked recently renovated with spotless white linen. Battlesteads Hotel staff are extremely friendly and ready to help when asked. Breakfast was calm, efficient with delicious local and home-smoked food, all freshly prepared to order. The buffet food reflected the high standards they set themselves. One suggestion though, please make sure certain foods are replenished when they need it, for example, the fresh fruit salad and delicious cake. I’m sure if the staff had been asked it would have been done. What a find! Well done Travelzoo!

Really lovely hotel, with an excellent restaurant and a really committed chef, who smokes his own fish and cheese. The eight course taster menu was delicious with each course being memorable in its own right. A real treat for lovers of thoughtfully crafted and well prepared food.
