Why We Love This Hotel

  • This 17th-century hotel is in a rural Devon village that is "ideal for exploring the delights of the South West" (The Daily Telegraph)
  • It's a 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • There's an elegant restaurant and a cosy bar with a fireplace

Lifton Hall Hotel is housed in three ivy-clad 17th-century cottages with colourful window boxes. The hotel is a few minutes' drive from the Devon-Cornwall border and is a "great base" from which to explore the nearby towns in both counties, "as well as delivering a peaceful retreat to escape the hustle and bustle" (The Daily Telegraph).

It's 10 minutes' drive from Cornwall's ancient capital, Launceston, which is known for its Norman castle, steam railway and independent shops, and a 20-minute drive from the market town of Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is dotted with picturesque villages and is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, is around 15 minutes' drive away. Padstow is around an hour's drive from the hotel. It has a lively port and well-known fish restaurants.

One of Lifton Hall Hotel's highlights is its locally sourced food. The décor features rich fabrics and Gothic windows. The rustic-style bar area sports wood-beamed ceilings and a fireplace. There is also an outside patio with tables and chairs.

The hotel is praised as a "welcoming rural retreat" with an "abundance of character" by The Daily Telegraph, and its 10 bedrooms are individually decorated in a cosy, country style. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, as well as views of the village or the countryside. Some rooms have wood-panelled walls and 4-poster beds.

We really enjoyed our two night stay at Lifton Hall Hotel. The room was warm & comfortable. The staff were friendly & helpful & the food was delicious. We were very impressed with the four course tasting menu that went with the Travelzoo offer. The bar was well stocked with a good selection of different gins. The home-made shortcake biscuits in the room each day was a very nice touch. We would be very happy to go back.

Enjoyed our two day break. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. I would like to have more of a selection of fresh vegetables with main meals as I am unable to eat peas. Also some chilli free choices on the main meal. Fortunately I was able to choose from the specials board.

We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at this hotel and would have liked to stay longer. Ideal location to get into Devon and Cornwall, very pleasant staff, great value for money and lovely room. Really really nice food too. Better value than other places we have stayed in, surprised that it doesn't have a higher star rating.
