Why We Love This Hotel

  • Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, is less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The hotel's WineGlass Restaurant features an extensive selection of wines and champagnes
  • Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house, and Woburn Safari Park are both 25 minutes' drive away
  • The riverside hotel has a characterful 13th-century Tithe Barn

The Barns Hotel is in a "tranquil" (The AA) location beside the River Great Ouse, on the outskirts of Bedford.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, which has over 1000 animals and offers road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, famous for being the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

You can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and admire three centuries of landscape design at Grade-I listed Wrest Park -- this country house is 25 minutes from the hotel by car.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library area within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio with views of the River Great Ouse. The terrace has a pizza oven, and fresh pizzas are available every Tuesday and Friday throughout the summer.

In summer, you can hire the hotel's electric riverboat for cruises up the  Great Ouse. The hotel is a popular venue for wedding parties.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished, and have spacious bathrooms, safe and free Wi-Fi.

Lovely place. Service at dinner was abysmal! Had to wait 40 minutes for our soup starter, gave up on our ice cream dessert after waiting 20 minutes for it to arrive so just went back to our room.

The free bottle of Prosecco in the room had a screw top and was not good. Otherwise a good stay. Staff at b’fast were excellent

Food in restaurant was excellent. All staff at all times were polite, friendly and helpful. Booked the boat hire but due to exceptionally bad weather we were unable to take the boat out. (There were 7 amber weather warnings in place by the met office, for that area). There was also a number of power cuts across the nation, which meant no hot water to our room on the first night. Again no fault of the hotel, it was a UK power/national grid problem with the power station at Little Barford, which is nearby.
