"Excellent service by staff. Sharne and Lorraine on reception were the best we have experienced in 5 years of travelzoo. Easy to see the hotel was not part of a chain so personal characteristics are allowed."

Overview

Barns Hotel has a "tranquil location on the outskirts of Bedford" (The AA) and is beside the River Great Ouse.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, which has over 1000 animals and offers both road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Famous for being the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma code, Bletchley Park is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion house has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio overlooking the River Great Ouse. The recently refurbished terrace now has a pizza oven, and fresh pizzas are available every Tuesday and Friday.

For an additional supplement, you can also rent an electric riverboat for up to two hours to cruise along the River Great Ouse.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished and have spacious bathrooms. All have free Wi-Fi.

Long delay (40 minutes after order placed) before evening meal appeared, and only after enquiring as to why the service was slow. Then, after less than two minutes our mains magically appeared, all plated up. Clearly kept under a hotplate and overlooked. My burger was tough and dry. A fresh one was prepared - another delay. Result, a rather spoiled meal experience. Breakfast! Confusion here. A menu card was on the table. No explanation of the 'system' had been offered. We noticed another couple going over to staff near the kitchen door and ordering from the menu. I then followed. My wife requested a speciality dish and I liked the look of the Full English. I placed the order with a waitress. Minutes later another waitress appeared at our table and told me to serve myself from the hot buffet as all the full English items were under the hot plates. Umm! Not so hot actually. In fact luke warm was nearer the mark. Finally, the general hotel deal included £25 per person towards the food bill for the evening meal. Questionable value if you decided to choose a low cost meal and did not in fact reach that limit. Our evening meal bill came to £35, which did appear to be below what I expected. We assumed the cost of the delayed meal had possibly been reduced. However, when we checked out the next day, we were informed there were no extras to pay. But, no refund offered. So, I presume, the hotel pockets £15 approx. as a result. No doubt, if we had ordered expensive dishes and exceeded the limit, we would have been charged! Not going for that sort of offer again!
