Overview
Family-run since the 1940s, the Buccaneer Hotel welcomes generations of visitors to St. Croix’s northern coast with a blend of old world charm and contemporary amenities. The 340-acre resort’s history began 300 years ago, when it was one of the island’s largest sugarcane plantations; the stone sugar mill still stands on the property.
All accommodations have private patios or balconies as well as refrigerators, satellite TVs, DVD players, coffee makers and air conditioning. Suites are available with private bedrooms, additional bathrooms, walk-in closets and trundle twin beds for families traveling with children 14 and under. Beachside villas, named Doubloons for the Spanish gold coins that washed up on the beach, have sitting areas with picture windows, patios and balconies with sweeping views of Christiansted Harbor as well as whirlpool tubs, a romantic favorite for honeymooners.
The resort’s three strips of sand cater to all types of beachgoers. Active travelers can play beach volleyball, kayak and snorkel on the palm-shaded Mermaid Beach. Those looking to relax with a good book can soak up the sun between the water and oceanfront golf course on Grotto Beach, and nature lovers can hike to the secluded Whistle Beach. Boats leaving the property’s private dock deliver visitors to Buck Island Reef National Monument, one of the Caribbean Sea’s finest marine gardens cared for the National Park Service.
Beyond the shoreline, guests can take tennis lessons at the on-site courts, swim in two freshwater pools, book tee times on the 18-hole golf course or work out any time of day in the 24-hour fitness center. A complimentary kids club offers daily games, crafts and movies for guests ages 4-12, while visitors of all ages are welcome to join art classes, treasure hunts and nightly entertainment. The Hideaway Spa offers facial and body treatments in addition to salon services.
Each morning guests are treated to a complimentary breakfast buffet on the terrace. For other meals and snacks, guests can choose between a beachfront bar, pool grill, cocktail lounge and an upscale reception hall with panoramic views of the sea. On Tuesday afternoons, the owner hosts a cocktail hour with live steel pan music and dancers.
