Why We Love It

  • "Stunning sea views and direct access to five miles of sandy beach are just two of the highlights at this popular hotel" -- The AA Hotel Guide 2018

  • You can dine in the AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant, which serves locally caught seafood and West Country produce

Overview

Saunton Sands Hotel is a Condé Nast Johansens-recommended property with direct beach access on the North Devon coast. It has an AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant and is praised by The Daily Telegraph for being extremely child friendly.

The hotel overlooks 3.5-mile-long Saunton Sands and the adjacent Braunton Burrows, part of a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve in the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Braunton Burrows, the second-largest sand-dune system in England, is home to a large number of rare plants and animals.

Mathias Oberg, who has worked in many Michelin-starred restaurants (including Oblix at The Shard in London), is head chef at the AA-Rosette-awarded main restaurant, which has sea views and Art Deco-inspired designs. "The kitchen is impassioned about using only West Country produce and turns out some stimulating dishes in the contemporary mould," says The AA.

Susy Atkins, a familiar face on BBC One's "Saturday Kitchen" and wine columnist for The Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine, has worked closely with the hotel to develop its wine list.

Facilities include a heated indoor swimming pool (open from 10 February), a health club, a shop and a supervised nursery. Stay in a Sea View Room for views of Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows.

  • "This is the ideal place for a good old-fashioned family holiday beside the seaside" -- The Daily Telegraph

This is an amazing hotel. We absolutely loved it. The decor is superb, the views amazing and the room provided every comfort. We have stayed with Brend before, and know the standard. This was exceptional. A highly traditional organisation, customers' wishes and comfort being foremost with all the staff.
Other Comments
It was a shame the indoor pool was closed as previous customers had said it was great, but it needed maintenance and we had to do without. The only other point was the price of the wine we chose with our meal. For £25 we expected a good wine but found it disappointing. When we got home and looked it up on line we found it priced at £3.50, which is a very high mark up.

A beautiful hotel tastefully modernised to preserve its Art Deco heritage. Lovely views from the restaurant and bars.

We had a sea view room which was a treat even though it was misty/foggy. Lovely to walk on the beach even though it was massively blowy. Fab staff.
Other Comments
I am afraid we were hugely disappointed with the meal we had in the evening. We especially chose SSH because of the fabulous seafood menu. No seafood on Sunday's menu, just scampi which was mass produced and quite honestly pretty unpalatable. The Lobster Bisque which was not on the menu, but which we were allowed to order, was delicious.

The food was fantastic. The surroundings are beautiful. The hotel is very comfortable, well furnished and cleaned to a high standard. We can think of nothing negative at all with our weekend visit. We will definitely return.
