"Hotel lobby was very clean and staff friendly and efficient. Rooms and bathroom have been redone but kept the vintage charm. Coffee shop was a bonus with $2 off lattes. My Room was clean but dark, bathroom tight especially small sink. Location was in a rough part of the city, with homelessness abound."

Overview

Opened in October 2016, Tilden Hotel is steps from posh shops and restaurants and serves as a bridge between Union Square and San Francisco's up-and-coming Tenderloin district. Known as an artist’s enclave, the neighborhood maintains the gritty appearance of its rougher days but is experiencing a resurgence of galleries and studios. The boutique hotel’s 1928 façade was kept intact, while the building was overhauled from top to bottom. Open, airy spaces feature cherry wood walls, and the property embraces the local community by curating artwork, furniture and even minibar snacks from small Californian businesses.

The intimate property has just 118 rooms and suites, each featuring white walls with sharp, high-gloss black trimmings as well as handcrafted wood headboards and plantation shutters over the large windows. Modern amenities like iHome docking stations, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minifridges come standard, as well as toiletries by Malin + Goetz and Marvis. Guests can choose between two double beds or one queen/king bed; for additional space, guests can upgrade to suites with second bathrooms and separate living areas with sofa beds. All accommodations feature keyless entry, allowing visitors to access their rooms through an app.

Guests can enjoy Equator Coffee as well as a slew of teas and breakfast pastries at the newly open Cafe at the Tilden. The Douglas Room, also open as of February 2017, is a cocktail-focused restaurant serving seasonal California cuisine to pair with craft spirits and liquors from across the globe. Room service is available from the restaurant. Guests have access to the hotel’s limited fitness center 24 hours a day, and the hummingbird garden found on the ground floor is a quiet retreat from the bustling city beyond the gate.

Radiator heat. Room is either hot or cold. They do provide space heaters upon request. Need high quality comforters/bedding. Nice friendly staff.

Average hotel but good amenities. On the edge of sketchy Tenderloin district with many homeless people in the area. Sad, depressing as opposed to dangerous.

Only thing I would suggest is air conditioning, I assumed at Hotel would have a/c, would not have selected this hotel had I known there was no a/c, will have to make sure in future travels

We had an emergency that prevented us from our planned getaway to SF and the Tilton hotel. We had looked forward for so long. Medical related. Extremely disappointed. I called the hotel to reschedule and learned that it was not possible. And it is clearly stated on the paperwork yes. Things happen so I guess I have learned to not book thru Travelzoo again because it is better dealing directly with hotels

We stayed here due to it’s proximity to the Orpheum theater. The bldg is old but renovated and nicely done. Our room was good- clean and tidy. The bathroom is teeny but clean and maintained. I don’t think there’s any a/c but an overhead ceiling fan (a nice one with a remote)- but we didn’t need the a/c. It has a radiator for the cold. I had no problem with our rooms but there are a lot of homeless around that area and just wasn’t my favorite part of San Fran. We spent most of our time away- and didn’t like walking around that part. I wouldn’t recommend renting a car as there’s zero parking- although they do have a valet parking if you wanna pay for it. It’s a good central location.

Stayed there primarily for the location and the price. It's basically a 3/5 star property.

No dresser in my room; so ok if overnight stay but inappropriate if longer term stay.

Very nice staff. No AC in the room and the tiny Euro size bathroom was problematic. The old elevator was a hassle for anyone past the 4th floor. The associated restaurant was great and the location keen for SF.
