Why We Love This Hotel

  • This restored 17th-century manor house is in "one of the country's finest locations" (The Daily Telegraph) and is an ideal spot for exploring the nearby coast and Dartmoor National Park
  • "Classic country-house dining with regional accent" (The AA) is on offer in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant
  • The property retains period features including fine woodcarvings and moulded ceilings

The 17th-century Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel is set at the end of a winding country lane, among rolling Devon hills.

The décor features elegant chandeliers and lavish curtains. The real highlights, however, are the period features, which include woodcarvings and moulded ceilings.

The hotel is in a great spot from which to explore both coast and countryside -- the sailing town of Salcombe is 20 minutes' drive away, while Dartmoor National Park is around 25 minutes' drive away. Exeter city centre is an hour away by car and is home to an impressive cathedral and Roman tunnels. Alternatively, you can visit the naval city of Plymouth, a 50-minute drive away.

"Care and imagination" (The AA) go into the dishes offered at the 2-AA-Rosette Queen Anne Restaurant, which uses produce grown on the grounds or locally obtained organic and seasonal fare. There's also an al fresco terrace, with views over the manicured gardens and valleys beyond, while the lounge bar offers a cosy atmosphere in colder weather.

The hotel has 16 bedrooms. Traditional Classic Rooms are decorated in light tones and earthy shades, while Superior Rooms have antique-style furniture, and some include 4-poster beds. Contemporary Classic Rooms have a more modern, boutique look. Wi-Fi is free.

roads approaching the hotel are very narrow, and we arrived in the dark, which was tricky. One there through, it was lovely and the staff were great. Dinner was nice and breakfast good. Room was fine.

Beautiful hotel with character. So peaceful and in amazing countryside. Dogs are welcome and can eat with owners downstairs in the Blue room. The Queen Anne dinning room is for guests without dogs. On the first morning breakfast was sparse with only one sausage and piece of bacon, on the second morning there was no table laid up for us and when breakfast arrived there was 2 sausages. Room was clean and the maid cleaned while we were at breakfast. Bottle of bubbly was an added delight. We felt very well looked after. The staff as a whole were very attentive and friendly.

If you are looking for a Spa style hotel with gymnasium and indoor swimming pool, this hotel is not for you! However, should you be romantically inclined this venue is simply perfect with vast very comfortable beds, large well appointed bedrooms and huge bathrooms allied to stunning views over the grounds and surrounding park..The food is simply exceptional, our dinner of smoked Salmon with an unusual mixture of salad vegetables simply could not have been better, followed by the most superb Confit et Cannon du Canard with delicious fresh vegetables was simply out of this world and could not be bettered our joint opinion as seasoned international luxury travellers worldwide...Enjoying Champagne beside the fire in a magnificent panelled hall decorated with large vases of scented fresh flowers, as an aperitif before dinner was a delight..Followed by dining in a breathtakingly beautiful period 18th century panelled dining room featuring beautiful original carved cartouches of game birds, think Grinolin Gibbons at Petworth House..Service was exemplary , always with a smile. Slept like ‘Owners of the Manor’ only to awake wonderfully refreshed ready to enjoy an excellent breakfast combining a huge ‘Country House style Buffet Choice’ of quality home made preserves, fresh fruits, French Patisseries, with the option of a good choice of hot cooked breakfast platters, from which we both chose the Buckland Tout Saints Grill....which was excellent... NB.This hotel is beautifully managed and a real find to stay shall be returning! Susie et John, Dartmoor National Park, Tavistock, Devon, England. January 2020
