"Old-school elegant [with] glorious views" -- Fodor's

Why We Love It

  • Traditional elegance and great staff -- expect turndown service
  • A top location: the intersection where Newbury Street, with its shops, meets the Boston Public Garden
  • Rooms are nearly twice the size of the Boston average, with L'Occitane toiletries
  • "Everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Winston Churchhill has dined at the Cafe at the Taj" (Fodor's)

Overview

It never hurts to follow in the Ritz's footsteps, and when Taj took over this hotel from Ritz, it inherited a top location and graceful bone structure. The look is classic upscale: heavy drapery; traditional furnishings; gold, brass and marble accents. Not too trendy, with plenty of space: The standard room is nearly twice the size of the Boston average, and suites are huge.

Guests consistently praise the accommodating and friendly staff as well as the neighborhood. Fodor's named the hotel's afternoon tea service as one of Boston's best. Right across the street is Boston Public Garden, which within a five-minute amble reaches Boston Common. The hotel is at the end of Newbury Street, lined with some of the city's swankiest shops.

  • "In true blueblood fashion, the décor is upscale, but not flashy, with richly-textured wall fabrics and tasseled drapes in a palette of beige, gold, rose and blue" -- Forbes Travel Guide
  • "An excellent luxury pick" -- Oyster.com

Arrived 545pm room still not ready from 3pm check in. Took an extra hour longer to get into room. Took precious time from our power vacation away from 4 children for my husband's birthday.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Everyone was willing to go out of thier way to see to our "comforts." The location was perfect for getting around town and the Park View was perfect even at night with the city lights detailing a beautiful skyline.

I wish that there was a coffee/tea maker in the room. We did ask for a tea pot, and they promptly brought one to our room. This amenity would make the stay close to perfect.

The staff was outstanding for the most part.
Other Comments
Check in was a little odd. The check in time was for 3pm. I arrived about 15 minutes early and was told the room wasn't ready. I walked around and waited for a call. About 3:40 I went back and was told I wasn't called because I was on the list for a room on a higher floor. I told the woman I did not need a higher level room. I was immediately given a room at that point. The staff was outstanding overall.

Nice classic hotel. Felt a bit dated. At least it did have USB charging ports on the desk. Nice view of Boston Public Garden. Great downtown location. Around the corner from Tatte Bakery for breakfast and lunch. Travel Zoo room rate was unbeatable, especially during graduation weekend.
Other Comments
Small bathroom like on a cruise ship. Mattress was worn out and saggy in the middle. Got a backache from sleeping on it. Found that disappointing in a luxury hotel.
