Overview

One of the first purpose-built hotels in Europe, Queens Hotel Cheltenham MGallery by Sofitel offers a historically significant place to stay in the heart of Cheltenham. The hotel first opened in July 1838 and has seen its fair share of eminent guests, including Sir Arthur Conon Doyle and Edward Elgar. It's been Grade II listed since the 1950s and retains many period features, including an impressive Georgian staircase.

The hotel has elegant contemporary interiors, including original wallpaper designed by Augustus Pugin (famed for his work on the Palace of Westminster). It overlooks Imperial Gardens -- site of Cheltenham's literature and art festivals -- and is a few minutes' walk from the centre of Cheltenham, as well as the fashionable Montpellier district's boutiques, bars and restaurants. It's also well placed for visiting pretty Cotswold villages and market towns such as Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold, which are both within 30 minutes' drive of the hotel.

The hotel's restaurant uses fresh ingredients from artisan producers and local farms, while the bar serves a separate menu of soups, sandwiches and pub favourites, as well as cocktails and more than 20 different types of gin. Breakfast is served in the Orangery, and meals can also be taken in the garden in fine weather.

The 84 rooms and suites have free Wi-Fi and comfortable beds with crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. Upgraded Deluxe rooms and suites are more spacious and have extras such as Nespresso coffee machines.

From the press:
  • "Its 84 bedrooms are large and stylish, its staff charmingly enthusiastic, its food celebrates the best of the Cotswolds." -- The Daily Telegraph
