Overview

The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run hotel in the heart of Windermere town. The property dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Lake Windermere -- "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet). Rough Guides recommends hiking up to Orrest Head (10 minutes' walk) for the panoramic views. National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and was a Taste Cumbria Dining Experience of the Year finalist in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards. The Guardian's critic Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch. The bar stocks local ales, wine and over 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

This time we thought the carpet in the lower dining room needed replacing as it was very dirty. The last time we stayed I sent an email directly to the hotel management - the Tasker family - suggesting they should install a heater above the front entrance door. The cold air does affect all diners in that location when they are having a meal, from morning to evening. Unfortunately, this hadn't been implemented and we heard the dining room guests, near the front door, complain about the cold..... We believe this will cause issues with rebooking for these clients; which could so easily be rectified. A shame as they have a great product to promote.
