Overview

"A warm welcome awaits" (The AA) at Ees Wyke Country House, which sits on a hillside above Esthwaite Water, one of the Lake District's lesser-known and smaller lakes. The property remained a private residence until 1976, and retains many home comforts inside.

It is in the village of Near Sawrey, a huddle of stone houses surrounded by countryside, and home to National Trust property Hill Top, which Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her stories. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was completed while Potter was staying at Ees Wyke.

Hawkshead, home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery (the shop is open year-round), and a 16th-century church that sits on the site of a Norse chapel, is a 5-minute drive away. You can walk the 4.5 miles from Near Sawrey to the Latterbarrow monument, 800 feet above sea level. It is not an intense hike, and there are far-reaching views of the fells from the top.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery is also a 5-minute drive away, or a 20-minute walk along country lanes, and it offers boat and bank fishing. It has a fishing tackle shop, and fly-fishing tuition is available. Grizedale Forest -- with its sprawling woodland, scenic trails and sculpture trail -- is a 15-minute drive, as is Wray Castle.

You can watch the sun set over the lake from the terrace, or leaf through maps of the local area by the fire in one of the lounges. Breakfast includes sausages from local farms and homemade bread. There are eight bedrooms, some with views of Coniston Old Man or the Langdale Pikes.

I would recommend anyone to go to Ees Wyke but If you do do yourself a favour and book in for the evening meal you will not get better anywhere. Richard the owner is a superb chef and if I were you I wouldn’t venture anywhere else for your meal . Breakfasts are superb with everything available you could wish for all with local produce have Richard’s breakfast and you are set up for the day I promise you. Caroline, Karolla, Angela and Catherine are all brilliant, friendly and cannot do enough for you. I am almost reluctant to share this as I want to keep this superb place to ourselves!! When we were there it was our 3rd time and we met two other couples who had been 4 times and 2 times which goes to show how brilliant this place is.

This was a lovely break in the Lakes,we used it as a family visit too.We were welcomed with a pot of tea in the lounge, where there was an open fire burning.Evening meal was three courses, that were well presented and tasty. There were lovely little touches, like sherry in our room and bottled water.Breakfast had a fabulous choice and was freshly cooked to order. There was even cream and whisky to put in your porridge!
