Overview

"A warm welcome awaits" (The AA) at Ees Wyke Country House, which sits on a hillside overlooking Esthwaite Water, one of the Lake District's lesser-known and smaller lakes. The property remained a private residence until 1976, and retains many home comforts inside.

It is in the village of Near Sawrey, a huddle of stone houses surrounded by countryside, and home to National Trust property Hill Top, which Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her stories. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was completed while Potter was staying at Ees Wyke.

Hawkshead, home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery (the shop is open year-round), and a 16th-century church that sits on the site of a Norse chapel, is a 5-minute drive away. You can walk the 4.5 miles from Near Sawrey to the Latterbarrow monument, 800 feet above sea level. It is not an intense hike, and there are far-reaching views of the fells from the top.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery is also a 5-minute drive away, or a 20-minute walk along country lanes, and it offers boat and bank fishing. It has a fishing tackle shop, and fly-fishing tuition is available. Grizedale Forest -- with its sprawling woodland and scenic trails -- is a 15-minute drive, as is Wray Castle. The castle is closed for winter from 11 November, but the grounds are free to roam.

You can watch the sun set over the lake from the terrace, or leaf through maps of the local area by the fire in one of the lounges. Breakfast includes sausages from local farms and homemade bread, and there's a 5-course dinner menu that changes daily, but book dinner in advance to avoid disappointment. There are eight bedrooms, some with views of Coniston Old Man or the Langdale Pikes.

The food. It was beautifully prepared and displayed. The breakfasts were of exceptional quality - the usual full English & continental but with the added extra of whiskey & cream with the porrage, Lock Fyne kipper, homemade marmalade and honey on honeycomb.

Also the room. It was a luxury with coffee, tea & bottled water also a carafe of sherry. A lovely shower room and a view over the lake.

Richard is a marvellous chef, the food is absolutely delicious and worth every penny. Why anyone would not have their evening meal there is beyond me I would recommend the food at EE’s Wyke totally so if you are booking here do yourself a great big favour and book the evening meal you will not be disappointed.

Its a country house with a real family feel where the owner Richard is very much in evidence, whether cooking delicious meals or helping you to park your car!

Lovely helpful staff, speedy and efficient. No trouble in remembering your foodie preferences either! We particularly valued one member of staff, Angela, who led us to the start of an amazing walk up to Latterbarrow where the 360 degree views on a sparkling day were breathtaking - or was that the effort we expended getting up there!

Difficult to choose one aspect - whole stay was lovely. Staff friendly but not over attentive. presentation and quality of food excellent, and the lounges for guests very comfortable.

the only thing I would mention is that we paid extra for a lake view room and only benefited from this if we stood up and lent on the windowsill! We were on 2nd floor so in future would ask for a room on the first floor. we were offered the chance to view another room but it had private bathroom as opposed to en-suite so we decided we would rather have the en-suite than have to go out of the bedroom during night if needing the bathroom. Otherwise the room was excellent with good quality furnishings, everything you needed, clean and very spacious.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The choice of food was limited but I didn't have any difficulty with that because the quality was excellent. All guests ate at 7:30 and we had a lovely sociable evening.
Other Comments
It was a great deal but the meal at £35 per head is slightly expensive
