Hallmark Hotel The Queen, Chester is filled with quirky features that reference its Victorian heritage -- look out for the reception desk made out of antique suitcases and bar menus resembling train tickets. There is also a chandelier in the lobby that includes the names of past queens.

The hotel is in the centre of Chester. Lonely Planet describes the city as "one of English history's greatest gifts" because of its medieval architecture and collection of Tudor- and Victorian-era buildings, all encapsulated by a red sandstone Roman wall.

The hotel is opposite Chester railway station, and a 10-minute walk from Chester Cathedral -- founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092 -- where you can take a tour to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views of the city.

Chester Zoo, with over 15,000 animals from 500 different species including Asian elephants, jaguars and orangutans, is 10 minutes' drive away.

Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse still in use in England, is a 20-minute stroll away.

One of the hotel's restaurants -- The King's Grill -- holds an AA Rosette and serves locally sourced food. Breakfast is served in the Jubilee Restaurant and snacks are available in the Waiting Room Bar.

The hotel has secluded Roman-themed gardens, three bars, a fitness suite and free Wi-Fi.

Although we got there at 3.00pm unable to have room until 3.30pm on return were then directed to our room but not told were the restaurant or any other facilities were on entering the room therewas a filthy bathmat on the floor from previous occupant room was set for one, one set of towels toiletries. The evening meal service was slow we were given artisan bread but no plates meal was cold no one around to ask about heating it. Dessert was ok poor value. Coffee was very basic and expensive. Breakfast was cold sausages were burnt black pudding was overcooked really hard everything had been out that long. Toaster took ages to cook three normal household toasters which were very slow one side of two them wasn't working. Tea was in a pot unable to stir it as lid was broken wouldn't come off. We went for a walk and returned at 11am as we had late checkout unable to get back in the room maid had to let us in as key card had been cancelled.
