Why We Love This Hotel

  • Eastwood Hall is set in extensive parkland grounds on the edge of Eastwood, a former coal-mining town
  • DH Lawrence was born in the town, and there is a museum dedicated to him nearby
  • The hotel is built around a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house

Eastwood Hall sits in 26 acres of private grounds, 30 minutes' drive from Nottingham city centre. At the centre of the hotel is a Georgian manor house, which was built as a family home around 1810 and was later used by British Coal as a regional office. Today the manor is a wedding and conference venue, and bedrooms are in a modern annex at the back of the hotel complex.

The property is on the edge of Eastwood, a former mining town bordered by farms and countryside. The DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum (open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday) is the author's childhood home and is a 10-minute walk away; you can learn how growing up in Eastwood influenced his controversial writing. The Blue Line Trail is a walking route that links all of the Lawrence-related sights nearby.

Beauvale Priory and Felley Priory are around 10 minutes' drive away; both have quaint tea rooms that serve homemade cakes and light lunches. The Derwent Valley Heritage Way is a 55-mile-long footpath that runs through the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. It passes a series of 18th- and 19th-century mill complexes and the watercourses that powered them, and can be reached from Belper or Duffied, which are both less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Wollaton Hall, Papplewick Hall and Thrumpton Hall stately homes can all be reached within 30 minutes, and Sherwood Forest -- of Robin Hood fame -- is 45 minutes' drive away.

The hotel has a restaurant and a bar. Leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a gym, a steam room, a beauty salon and an outdoor tennis court. All 150 bedrooms are in a contemporary annex, and are decorated in neutral tones.

One thing I was very concerned about was that my bank Santander contacted me to say that Eastwood hall had charged £139 to my credit card (the one I used to book) and they were suspicious of it. I rang Eastwood Hall and they said, "sorry, mistake". How can that happen? Why have they got my card details so easily available to mis-use?

We had a really nice stay at Eastwood Hall on the meal inclusive deal, the room and meal were both excellent. While we were there we made use of the spa which was excellent.

Nice hotel with excellent facilities. The salmon we had in the restaurant could have been better.

Arrived early, unable to check in, but room not ready until 1 hour after stated check-in time. Would have thought two and a half hours of waiting could have been eased with free cups of tea. Other than that, we enjoyed what was on offer.

The room was not up to standard, was dusty in certain areas even though we could not check in at 2 pm as the room was not cleaned The bathroom needs updating.

Evening meal was a disaster because the staff didn’t follow any instructions about food intolerances and my wife’s starter and main course had to be sent back twice, and we ate separately as a result. Wine was delivered to the table unopened and left for us to open (Prosecco), breakfast the request for poached eggs took 25minutes and two prompts about when it would be ready!

Room was fine, clean and roomy. Beds were Tired and a little on the hard side. Dinner was OK , nothing outstanding. Service in restaurant was very poor and disjointed

The price and the room. Reception was slick and friendly and the bar staff were good. Location was good for tourist attractions and city centre.
Other Comments
Staff in the restaurant were very poorly trained. Most of the waiters/waitresses were young and had no idea of how to serve at table: what cutlery was used for which part of a meal; how to serve wine or even when to remove plates and unfinished meals fro under a guest’s nose!. I would say that, in my opinion, was probably the fault of uninterested line managers who obviously could not be bothered to properly instruct their young charges. The menu was very limited and I can only say that I was glad we were staying for 2 nights only as it would have been difficult to pick a meal for a third night at this hotel.

Pleasant country hotel geared up as a conference venue. The changing area in their spa needs a bit of updating. Breakfast finished at 9:00 which is fine for conferences etc. however if you are to promote as a leisure venue some more flexibility would be good. Service in the bar needs to be improved (training!)

Fantastic pool though changing rooms are dated. Excellent food, though no fish available at all on the night we stayed. Otherwise great.
