East Sussex National is around 10 minutes' drive from the South Downs National Park (an International Dark Sky Reserve) and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making the hotel a great base from which to explore their rolling hills and bustling market towns.

There are plenty of sites for history buffs to explore. In Lewes, which is 15 minutes' drive away, there is a ruinous Norman castle and a priory, as well as a Tudor house that belonged to Anne of Cleves. Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, is around 40 minutes' drive away, as is Brighton, home of the famous Pavilion.

In 2017, East Sussex National was awarded four AA Silver Stars, which signify that a property offers a superior level of quality in hospitality, service and cleanliness.

The Pavilion Restaurant has two AA Rosettes and serves a collection of dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The Hunnington Restaurant and Ryder Bar & Terrace is in the golf club house and serves traditional home cooking, light lunches and sandwiches. The Sussex Lounge has outdoor seating in the gardens or on the balcony terrace.

Club Rooms have Wi-Fi and private balconies overlooking the golf course.

The health club offers aerobics classes (supplements apply) and its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a spa pool, a sauna, and steam room and a gym. Horsted Spa has an aromatherapy room, a monsoon shower, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, a sauna and a relaxation room. Massages and exfoliation treatments are available at a supplement, but there is limited availability in the spa on weekends and treatments should be pre-booked. There are also two golf courses: the East Course and West Course.

The room was large and airy, the bathroom was lovely and the mattress was comfortable, but let down by poor pillows.

The service was very poor. When I asked the waitress for a cappuccino at breakfast she rolled her eyes and said yes in a way that made it clear she didn't really want to get it for me. At checkout the receptionist didn't ask if we enjoyed our stay, and seemed to be very bored with having to take payment and check us out. In addition the cooked breakfast was dried out and extremely disappointing. I've had consistently better breakfasts at a Premier Inn. Lastly the pillows were rock hard, meaning neither my husband nor I were able to get a good night's sleep. It's a shame they don't offer the same good night guarantee that Premier Inn do, I thought that a 4 star hotel would do better than this.

Balcony with lovely views and excellent sports facilities

Whilst I enjoyed my stay and thought it was good value for the amount paid with the Travelzoo offer, it wouldn't have been at the full price. Extremely limited menu for the inclusive evening meal and rather than having something we really wanted to eat, we both had to make do with what was on offer. Meal was disappointing.

Staff were most attentive, and the leisure team were most helpful to my visually impaired partner

We took our guide dog out on a unused part of the golf course and let him of the lead for a bit of freedom in the rough but the jobsworth green keeper made us leave the course, I can understand that he didn't want dogs loose on the course, but the part we were on wasn't part of any fairways or near any greens. As there were no paths or walkways on the site we could use to exercise the dog it was not ideal for a guide dog.

Quiet and peaceful, balcony an essential.
Other Comments
The restaurant serves very good food but the service is haphazard and not well managed. Each person seems to try their best but coordination and management are absent. Wine half way through our meal and trying to serve the main when the plates from the 1st hadn’t been taken away. Lovely food so....?
