East Sussex National is around 10 minutes' drive from the South Downs National Park (an International Dark Sky Reserve) and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making the hotel a great base from which to explore their rolling hills and bustling market towns.

There are plenty of sites for history buffs to explore. In Lewes, which is 15 minutes' drive away, there is a ruinous Norman castle and a priory, as well as a Tudor house that belonged to Anne of Cleves. Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, is around 40 minutes' drive away, as is Brighton, home of the famous Pavilion.

In 2017, East Sussex National was awarded four AA Silver Stars, which signify that a property offers a superior level of quality in hospitality, service and cleanliness.

The Pavilion Restaurant has two AA Rosettes and serves a collection of dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The Hunnington Restaurant and Ryder Bar & Terrace is in the golf club house and serves traditional home cooking, light lunches and sandwiches. The Sussex Lounge has outdoor seating in the gardens or on the balcony terrace.

Club Rooms have Wi-Fi and private balconies overlooking the golf course.

The health club offers aerobics classes (supplements apply) and its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a spa pool, a sauna, and steam room and a gym. Horsted Spa has an aromatherapy room, a monsoon shower, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, a sauna and a relaxation room. Massages and exfoliation treatments are available at a supplement, but there is limited availability in the spa on weekends and treatments should be pre-booked. There are also two golf courses: the East Course and West Course.

Young, delightful and helpful staff. Would have liked room to be serviced earlier - had to ask. Felt chef was trying too hard: why roast new potatoes and call chick peas in tomato sauce a "bean cassoulet"? A cassoulet is a complete meal and contains several kinds of meat and sausage - it is NOT an accompaniment to cod fillet! But quality of food was good and portions generous - and the soups were outstanding. Felt the 3-night deal on half board was excellent value and hope it will be repeated - had a really excellent break.

A lick of paint on some marks on the walls in room 207 and removal of a couple of stains on the carpet would make the room even better. Thank you.
