Built in 1820 on the site of a castle that was destroyed during the French Revolution, the elegant Château de Courban has been carefully restored and is now a hotel with a fine-dining restaurant and a spa. It's in the Burgundy village of Courban, not far from the vineyards of the Châtillonnais, where vines have grown for more than 2,000 years. The pretty town of Châtillon-sur-Seine is around 16 kilometres away -- head to the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais, where among the historical artefacts are archaeological treasures from the Vix Grave, a Celtic burial site discovered near the village of Vix.
The hotel's grounds have features including a pretty rose garden and an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers. There are plenty of places to relax with a drink, such as the sunny terrace and the comfortable lounge with its open fireplace. The Nuxe Spa has facilities including a hammam, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. It offers a range of health and beauty treatments.
The light and spacious fine-dining restaurant opens out onto a decked terrace area with views of the Italian gardens, which are illuminated at night creating a romantic ambience.
Classic rooms are situated in the main house and have garden views, while Prestige rooms look out onto the swimming pool and the countryside beyond. If you would like a little outdoor space, consider one of the chic Signature rooms, which have private terraces or balconies. The restored 16th-century Dovecote offers rustic charm and contemporary comforts such as a Nespresso machine and a video projector.
