"We liked the place and the service very much. Everything was of a good quality, right down to little thigs like the toilet rolls!! OK a funny thing to mention but it just illustrates the attention to detail they put into the service. Plenty of tea / coffee / milks in the room, nice quality bedding. Top quality chef producing some delightful food."

Overview

The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is a former coaching inn set in six acres of picturesque grounds in the North Devon countryside.

There are lots of walking routes nearby, including the Tarka Trail, the Two Moors Way and the South West Coast Path, and the hotel has maps and trails for guests to use.

The hotel's gardens extend down to the River Taw, and the property offers a 5-mile stretch of salmon and trout fishing. There's also an on-site fishing school. Guests can try falconry, horse riding and shooting on site (charges apply), while DVD players and fishing equipment are available to hire (supplements apply; pre-booking advised).

Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks are half an hour's drive away, as is the city of Exeter. It's a 25-minute drive to RHS Garden Rosemoor (open year round).

The restaurant specialises in classic British cuisine made using local Devon ingredients, and the bar offers three local ciders and a number of real ales.

Rooms are spacious and feature antique French furniture. The rooms at the back have views over the garden to Heywood Forest and Eggesford Church.

The location is absolutely fine, set back off the main road so peaceful and quiet. Very little else in the area, so either good if you like walking or you need to drive to go elsewhere. The hotel was sadly a little quiet, great for us, but I hope they get more trade in higher seasons, they certainly deserve it. (We went early December)

Food was good. Room a little tired but that might be because it was a dog friendly room. I think breakfast would be better served in the restaurant area rather than their function room. Brilliant location if you’re bringing a dog that likes lots of walking as lots of woods nearby. We caught the train from the local train station to Exeter for a day out.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff, food and level of cleanliness we're all all excellent. The two dining rooms lacked atmosphere, but were quite acceptable.

Really enjoyed stay at The Fox & Hounds Hotel - especially after the power outage last time we were there - food was just right and little waitress was run off her feet.

Cooked breakfast on the first day was over cooked (18th Nov) breakfast on the 19th was much better. The young female manager did a sterling job and took on many rolls during our stay.

A really nice hotel with friendly helpful staff. It’s in a nice quiet location where you really need a car, or there is a train station nearby (but you have to walk along quite a busy road without any footpath) .
