Darwin's Townhouse is a late-18th-century Georgian property that underwent a complete refurbishment in 2016 to turn it into a 20-bedroom boutique bed and breakfast in the heart of Shrewsbury town centre.

Located on a quiet street, the hotel overlooks many of the town's Tudor buildings and it's a short stroll from the shops, restaurants and bars of the town centre. The hotel is 100 metres from the River Severn path -- great for a waterside stroll.

Battlefield Falconry Centre and Attingham Park, an English country house owned by the National Trust, are 15 minutes' drive away. The Dana Prison, which offers jailhouse tours, is 10 minutes' walk away. The ruins of Haughmond Abbey are less than 20 minutes' drive away.

Awarded 5-Star B&B status by The AA, the hotel has an octagonal lounge with a fire, books, and games. Retreat to the snug (with a fully stocked honesty bar) or head to the large, bright conservatory with views of the gardens. The modern décor is complemented by features such as a stone staircase and original fireplaces.

Breakfast is served in the conservatory, and features local seasonal produce. While the hotel does not serve lunch or dinner, it has two sister restaurants within a short stroll: The Loopy Shrew, serving traditional English cuisine, and Porterhouse SY1, which offers American-inspired dishes.

A lovely hotel, very well located close to the town centre. We were given a warm welcome although the heating in our friend's room wasn't working and our room was cool. We loved all the Darwin themed artwork and artifacts. Lovely food of the highest quality at Darwin's Kitchen and at the hotel breakfast.

An inch of raise on the head of the bed in Room 8 would be good, as the floors slope and we didn't enjoy sleeping with our heads pointing downhill!

The hotel has a Galápagos theme which was particularly great for us as we have just come back from visiting the islands.

Lovely break for 2 nights--warm and cosy garden room with beautiful bathroom. Breakfast excellent and served quickly. We were made very welcome and assisted to find a car park that wasn't flooded as nearest was not recommended for this reason. Pity they have no on-site car parking. Restaurant is not attached to property but a little walk away uphill--fine for us but some may find this awkward.
