Why We Love This Hotel

  • This 17th-century manor is in the South Pennines, on the edge of Brontë Country
  • The restaurant has an AA-Rosette for its "well-crafted cooking" (The AA)
  • Popular with celebrities, the hotel was also a filming location for the BBC's "Last Tango in Halifax"

Overview

Set in West Yorkshire, close to Halifax and the rugged South Pennine countryside, this ivy-clad Jacobean manor is "delightful", says The AA. On the edge of the area known as Brontë Country for its association with the famous literary sisters, the property is no stranger to celebrity guests, having hosted The Beatles and Jamie Oliver. It also featured in the BBC's "Last Tango in Halifax".

The hotel is on the outskirts of Halifax, where the villages surrounding the town blend into the Yorkshire countryside. It is around 45 minutes' drive from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Peak District National Park.

The 17th-century property retains many of its original features, including open fireplaces and stone mullioned windows. Keep an eye out for the stone Maltese cross above the hotel's central gable, which denotes that at one time the estate was in the hands of the ancient Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

The hotel's AA-Rosette restaurant is candlelit and oak panelled -- dinner in this "elegant" space "provides the highlight of any stay", says The AA. The Long Bar serves local ales on tap and cocktails.

Rooms have Wi-Fi and room service is available 24 hours a day.

The food was amazing, enjoyed every mouthful
Other Comments
Room was poor quality, bed seemed very short, walls were scuffed and stained carpets. room was quite cramped. Sharp tiles in bathroom, sower over taps so water went everywhere. bathroom definitely needs some TLC. Food was fantastic - although slow drinks service. asked to try some wine to buy a bottle and was given a glass instead. Restaurant ambience very nice, couldn't hear a wedding going on which was great. Would recommend eating here but not staying the night. Staff were very friendly

This is a beautiful old house dating back to the 12th century and now a hotel is sympathetically accomodating the old and comfort of a modern hotel. The garden is simple and relaxing and the food in the restaurant is delicious.

Ignore the surrounding area. As soon as you are in the hotel you do not feel as though you are near a major town. Very easy to get to some wonderful countryside

I think al la carte is restrictive especially as hotel is remote, I think there should be other options but no complaints
