Map & Directions

It's about 40 minutes by taxi from JFK Airport and the fare is approximately £32 ($50), not including tip and tolls. Alternatively, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and change for the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station, which is three minutes on foot from the hotel. The journey should take about an hour but will be much cheaper.

Overview

TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South is a chic converted office block with high-tech facilities and friendly staff in Midtown Manhattan.

It is well-placed for sightseeing -- Times Square (and its eight Subway lines) is a 15-minute walk away, and it's five minutes on foot to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The Macy's flagship store, two blocks away, provides ample shopping.

Reflecting the TRYP group's Spanish roots (this was its first property in the US), the hotel's Gastro Bar at 35th Street restaurant serves tapas alongside American classics and is popular with guests and locals -- this may be due to a daily happy hour from 4-11pm. A full European buffet breakfast is served here in the mornings, and on Thursday evenings there's live music.

Bedrooms are modern, and some have balconies. Higher room types also have bars and fridges in the living areas. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there is a small 24-hour fitness gym.

When I arrived to check in, I was told that they had already checked someone into my reservation. They called the other Johnson who was already in him room and told him there was a mix up and that he needed to come back to the front desk to have his card swiped for incidentals. They tried to downgrade my room as a result. I had to wait 30 minutes for them to find me a room.
