As a city that "perfectly combines youthful energy with intellectual pursuit and aesthetic beauty" (The Daily Telegraph), the history-soaked university town of Salamanca (now a UNESCO World Heritage City) is like one big open-air museum. With an excellent central location and magnificent palatial interior, the 5-star Alameda Palace is an ideal base for a luxury city break in this intriguing cultural gem.
The Alameda Palace is on the Paseo de la Estación, opposite a large green oasis, the Parque de Alamedilla. Salamanca's lively Plaza Mayor, with its shops, bars, restaurants and cafés, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The 16th-century Casa de las Conchas, a former palace (now a library), is 13 minutes on foot from the hotel. It was built by one of the knights of the Order of Santiago de Compostela, and the scallop-shell motif covering the building denotes its connection to the famous pilgrim route, the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James). Among the many other historical buildings of note in Salamanca are its two cathedrals, one modern (Nueva) and the other medieval (Vieja); an excellent vantage point for viewing both side by side is the Patio Chico, found along the cathedral's 500-year-old walls.
The hotel’s spacious, opulently decorated, antique-stuffed rooms and suites feature marble bathrooms with hydromassage (spa jet) columns; suites add whirlpool baths, and some include fabulous views over the city. All rooms are air-conditioned and include free Wi-Fi, a mini bar, a safe and a satellite TV. There is a lift and facilities for disabled guests, as well as a bridal suite. Room service, including breakfast in bed, is also available.
Among the hotel's other facilities is its elegant Venecia à la carte restaurant, which serves traditional Spanish and international food, and has upscale décor, crystal chandeliers and a well-stocked wine cellar. There is also a bar, an exercise room, a Jacuzzi, a sun terrace and a seasonal rooftop pool, as well as banquet and meeting facilities. Private parking is available on site for 16.50€ per day.
