Makeney Hall Hotel is a Victorian mansion with views across the Amber Valley and the Peak District. The 4-star property is set in six acres of grounds and retains period features including elegant oak panelling and an oak fireplace.

The hotel is in the Derbyshire village of Milford, and there is lots to do in the area. The hotel is less than 15 minutes' drive from Kedleston Hall, a "spectacular 18th-century mansion with [Robert] Adam interiors and parkland", according to the National Trust.

The hotel is close to the River Derwent and there are lots of local heritage walks in the Derwent Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its history of cotton production.

The edge of the Peak District National Park is a 30-minute drive away. Chatsworth House near Bakewell (home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire) and Haddon Hall, a Tudor country house with Elizabethan gardens, are less than 50-minutes' drive away. You can also explore the market town of Bakewell, home of the Bakewell pudding and "ringed by famous walking trails and stately homes", according to Lonely Planet.

The conservatory restaurant serves local and seasonal ingredients and has views of the garden.

Well-behaved pets are an extra £20 per room, per night.

Service in general was good, nice atmosphere, good food

Stay was marred by poor state of executive room...lots of cobwebs, debris from previous guests etc. & more so by incident on leaving when our car was blocked in the disabled bay for several hours & the reception Staff member did not deal with it very well at all. This caused considerable upset as I almost missed an important appointment.

Room was not clean...glitter on floor (& towels!), dark hairs in shower & bathroom, & very thick cobwebs on curtains, windows, & room surfaces in general.

Wasn’t happy with the executive room. Cobwebs rusty bin bedding needs attention. Dirty windows. This hotel has the most fantastic grounds but unfortunately a lot of areas need seeing too. Was going to complain about the room but didn’t want to start off on a bad note as the food was excellent.

Good bedroom and hotel grounds. \Very good evening meal and service.
Other Comments
The hotel didn't separate a very noisy family wedding party from regular guests e.g. the lounge was taken over and breakfast was chaotic with young children running round the self-service hot food. Breakfast service was poor. The bar was tiny, with inadequate seating for the size of the hotel.
