Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island is known for its sugar white sands and laid-back atmosphere. Dressing up here might mean wearing pants with flip-flops or putting on a shirt instead of a bikini top.
Like most of the hotels in this area, the DiamondHead Beach Resort and Spa has that relaxed vacation vibe but without the Old Florida décor that’s the hallmark of many hotels in the area.
Instead of bright tropical prints and wicker furniture, the lobby here is cool and refined with light marble floors and overstuffed jewel toned easy chairs and rugs.
Suites are even more subdued with light stone tiled floors and blind wood furniture. All have furnished private balconies. Ask for a higher floor ocean-facing suite and be rewarded with surf views so close it creates the illusion of hovering over the waves.
Fully equipped kitchenettes and separate living spaces with pull-out sofas make this a particularly good choice for families. Kids of all ages can take part in all day water side games like beach volleyball, hermit crab races, treasure hunts and crafting activities.
Those who’d prefer not to cook on vacation can dine at either the steak and seafood spot, the relaxed lounge or just hang out by the water and order from the poolside bar. If that gets old, the resort is only a 12 minute walk to “Times Square” where most of the shops, eateries and nightlife can be found.
Other amenities include a small but serviceable spa, free loaner bikes for hotel guests and a water sports shop that rents everything from paddle boards to kayaks to WaveRunners.
