Hotel Indigo San Diego Del Mar
Why We Love This Hotel
- A low-key hideaway tucked in among beach bungalows only a few blocks from shore
- In the town of Del Mar, everything really is “of the sea” with water views everywhere
- The greens of Torrey Pines Golf Course are 10 minutes away by car
- Del Mar’s boutiques are about a mile away, as is the famous horseracing track
When a multi-milliondollar renovation washed through the Hotel Indigo in 2012, it left behind bold allusions to the ocean, which crashes and foams two blocks away. Orchids, starfish and seaglass sit on shelves, and giant murals of shells and surf span entire walls in guest rooms.
Outdoor hallways lead to rooms and frame a central courtyard where loungers allow for sun-basking around an outdoor pool and a fire pit. The whole place sits on a bit of a bluff, so blazing orange sunsets over the ocean are visible from the grounds and from the private patios attached to many rooms.
All guests get free parking, and from here it’s only a quick shuffle beneath the palm trees and past the bungalows of this low-key neighborhood to reach the coastline. The mile of road north of the hotel leads to the center of the town of Del Mar. Little shopping villages cluster around with boutiques, restaurants, and surf gear stores.
Guests aren’t much further from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, where galloping steeds excite the crowd through summer and fall. San Diego is about 30 minutes south by car.
