Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton is a grand old seaside hotel with well-tended gardens and impressive views of the coastline and the Isle of Wight. The hotel is located on East Cliff, a 5-minute walk along a zigzag path from Bournemouth's 7-mile-long beach.

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk along the waterfront from Bournemouth Pier and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, where you can see humboldt penguins, green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks, among other species. Bournemouth's train station and high-street shops are 15 minutes' walk away. 

The New Forest is 20 minutes' drive away. This 220-square-mile national park is home to ponies and deer, and has many walking, cycle and nature trails to explore. We recommend the deer-viewing platform at Bolderwood, around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel; three circular walks start at the car park and visitor centre there.

Frederick's, the hotel's restaurant, serves traditional British dishes in an impressive high-ceilinged dining room with sea views. There's also a lounge for light bites and afternoon tea, and a club-style bar. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a gym (free for guests).

We booked 2 x 2 night stays. We had brilliant weather that we were able to enjoy and spent some time watching the world go by from the big bay window of our room or the terrace with a drink in hand. After the first night, which was a bit manic due possibly to not enough staff for number of guests, the dining situation improved no end. The staff were friendly and helpful. The biggest plus was the room we were allocated was big and comfortable and near the lift, absolutely 'spot on'.

Unfortunately there wasn't enough 'ordinary' choices on the evening menu. Only glad we had booked for the two evening meals.

It's location is excellent and the free car parking was a bonus.

Hotel was understaffed in the bar, kitchen and restaurant. Those staff present worked very hard and did their best apart from one girl at breakfast who announced we had to hurry as kitchen closing in 5 minutes. Dark hair long pony tail. The air conditioning was inefficient, it was extremely hot that weekend. Dinner took 2 hours to be served and only received main course , no starter or dessert. Main course disappointing and virtually inedible when it did arrive. Breakfast was appalling, fresh fruit consisted of melon cubes and quartered oranges. No croissants and juices lukewarm. Hot food removed immediately after 9.30am despite having to wait 15 minutes for a table to be cleared for us. Tables piled high with dirty crockery, no cutlery or hot plates.

We had a lovely comfortable room with a sea view. The weather turned out to be glorious so the fact that the room had air conditioning was a bonus. Generally the staff were helpful and accomodating.

To be frank no, would only wish to praise the efforts of the few staff there. We felt so sorry for them, shouted at by all and trying to help as best they could. It wasn't their fault, it was Hallmark's management to blame.

Paid extra for seaview which was obscured by scaffolding. Staff levels totally inadequate for number of guests restaurant in uproar, many of us not getting any food for 2 to 3 hrs after order. Breakfast complete fiasco, running out of fruit, croissants, tabkes unlaid, dirty only 3 staff, completely overwhelmed by numbers fir breakfast. Should gave stayed - had paid for - 2 nights as part of your deal but checked out after 1 night. Appalling!! Have stayed all around world in all classes of hotels but I have never experienced such a badly managed hotel with a Manager who couldn't be bothered to speak with us.

Hotel and room was very nice. Bar staff were friendly. Hotel in a lovely location if walking is not an issue.

Bathroom was worn and tired. Cooked Breakfast was low quality and tasted bad! Fried eggs were swimming in oil! Staff kept you waiting but didn't even acknowledge you were there. Reception did not even ask how our stay was when checking out.
