Overview

Otterburn Castle Country House Hotel is a true castle hotel, surrounded by 32 acres of wooded grounds on the edge of the Northumberland National Park. Dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, it was built to protect the region from the invading Scots and still retains its turrets and castellated walls.

There's plenty to do in the area, including visiting Alnwick Castle (half an hour away by car), where scenes from 'Harry Potter' were filmed. The Scottish Borders are under an hour's drive away and the Otterburn Village Trail (a 2-hour loop), starts at the castle gates and winds into the village. Guests can also go fishing in the River Rede for free.

Back on site, you can treat yourself to an in-room treatment (on request, charges apply) or explore the expansive grounds, which include a bluebell wood and an old boating lake. Then settle down in the lounge for fireside scones, sandwiches, tea and cake (available from noon-5pm, Monday-Saturday and 3-6pm on Sunday).

The main restaurant, the Oak Room, is set in a historic oak-panelled rooms with stained glass windows overlooking the drive and lawn. The ingredients are locally sourced -- beef, lamb, game and free-range eggs come from local farms and the bread is baked on site. For more casual fare, the Stable Bar & Bistro (in the former carriage house), serves a range of pub favourites, including rump steak, fish and chips and Sunday roasts (open daily, 5-9.30pm).

Refurbished in 2014, rooms are all located within the main castle building itself. Some upgraded rooms have antique 4-poster beds and original fireplaces. Wi-Fi is free across the hotel, but cannot be accessed in some rooms due to the solid castle walls (wired access is provided instead). In the morning, head down to the Oak Suite, for breakfast -- there's fruit, yoghurt, pastries and hot dishes cooked to order.

The staff generally were very pleasant, and although we only met the manager, Ellie, at breakfast on the first morning, she was very helpful and friendly and will, I'm sure, address any problems that are reported.

Dinner on the first evening was very disappointing. The quality of the food was poor, and it took almost two hours for the kitchen to produce three courses.

The hotel had a nice period architecture but it was clearly being run on a budget by inexperienced staff
Other Comments
The evening meal on our Sunday arrival consisted of one choice - Sunday Roast that we had already eaten at lunchtime en route!. This wasn't specified at the time of booking and doesnt appear on Otterburn Castle website either. We therefore opted for the vegetarian meal that consisted of bagged salad leaves (clearly from a bag pre washed) and goats cheese ravioli that was undercooked and had no sauce whatsover so was inedible and all of us left the meal. On the second morning there was no hot water available to wash / bathe etc

Appeared to be understaffed at times. Bistro not open during the week which limited dining to restaurant with very limited menu choice. bathroom cold due to radiator not working, also shaving light not working.
