Overview

We can't remember the last time a Chicago hotel opened to this much fanfare. Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ and Vanity Fair all wrote glowingly about this old-meets-new Michigan Avenue property, but we think Chicago Magazine said it best: "This hotel is going to blow your mind."

Originally a gentlemen-only private club for the elite, this palatial property opened to the public for the first time in 125 years in May 2015. The property restored many of the 19th-century details like marble floors, rich wood-paneled walls, 12 working fireplaces, stained-glass windows and cast-iron staircases.

Guest rooms offer a nod to the building's history as an athletic club, with details like table legs wrapped like tennis racquets and pommel horse-style seating at the end of your bed. Modern touches like power centers with USB hookups, Bluetooth sound systems and complimentary Wi-Fi bring your stay into the 21st century. Bathrooms feature white-tiled walls, Carrara marble sinks and C.O. Bigelow Apothecary bath products.

The restaurants and bars on the 2nd floor are run by Chicago's Land and Sea Dept., also behind the Michelin-starred Longman & Eagle. The Game Room bar features an indoor bocce court, foosball and a shuffleboard table; play while you sip a locally brewed craft beer or a classic cocktail. In the Cherry Circle Room, dine on a menu inspired by original 1890s-era options like chateaubriand of beef, roasted leg of lamb, caviar or a bone-in ribeye steak.

Guests should absolutely make a stop at Cindy's on the 13th floor. It's the only addition to the original building and became an instant hot spot as soon as it opened. Evoking a Great Lakes beach house, the rooftop terrace offers food and drinks and amazing views of downtown Chicago overlooking Millennium Park. Those looking for a more casual destination can find a Shake Shack outpost on the ground floor.

Located across from Millennium Park and the Art Institute, the CAA is minutes from everything you'd want to see in downtown Chicago. The Magnificent Mile is just north across the river, State Street and the Loop are a few blocks west, and the "Restaurant Rows" of Randolph Street and Fulton Market are a 10-minute cab ride away. With a CTA station a block away and buses outside the front door, any other part of the city can be easily accessed.

  • "One of the most architecturally and historically significant buildings in Chicago" -- Chicago Magazine

Fabulous room - massive bathroom, lots of space, I had a couch and a view of Millenium Park, the bean, and Lake Michigan! Front desk and room service were quite friendly

Lots of cool architecture and historical stuff about the building but it's not a museum, it's hip without being tragically hip

We really enjoyed renting the bicycles the next day to ride along Lake Michigan!

Although our room was rather small and only with a view of the alley, we could have paid to upgrade. But our room was very clean, quiet, and updated with an amazingly comfortable bed!
