Named after the famous Edinburgh street it was built on, in 1775, The George Hotel was originally built as five separate town houses. It became a hotel in 1881, and is one of the Scottish capital’s oldest, featuring a striking stone exterior and an elegant interior that mixes modern and classic décor, with high ceilings, chandeliers and pillars.
The hotel is well placed for visiting the city’s main attractions. Among them are the 11th-century Edinburgh Castle, a 12-minute walk away; the National Museum of Scotland, 13 minutes by foot; and The Royal Botanic Gardens, just under 30 minutes’ walk away. For boutiques, bars and restaurants, head to Georgian New Town, mere minutes away, or bustling Princes Street, just around the corner.
Edinburgh is filled with good restaurants -- five of which have a Michelin star. But if you fancy a night in, the hotel’s Printing Press restaurant and bar serves seasonal, Scottish produce -- a highlight is their Sunday Roast, and they also have a children’s menu. Breakfast and lunch are also served here, or you can opt for Burr & Co, the on-site café serving sandwiches, salads and pastries to take away or eat in.
The 249 sophisticated rooms range from Standard to Suites, and feature oak and brass details, as well as flat-screen TVs with cable channels and movies on demand. WiFi is free. Deluxe rooms and Suites come with bathrobes and slippers, and many have striking city views.
