Overview

Built in 1619 by attorney Rees Jones, The Feathers Hotel was converted into an inn by 1670 and is one of the most well-known Grade I-listed buildings in Ludlow. The ornately half-timbered building features motifs of the Prince of Wales's feathers, from which the hotel gets its name.

Former Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom John Betjeman once described Ludlow as "probably the loveliest town in England". Once a site of frequent clashes between English and Welsh forces, Ludlow has a ruinous 12th-century castle and some of its medieval town walls still survive, as does Broadgate -- one of the seven medieval gates to the town. Head to Ludlow Museum and the castle to learn more about Ludlow's history -- both are less than five minutes walk from The Feathers.

Ludlow also has many fine Georgian buildings, and you can take in excellent views of the Welsh Marches from the top of the tower of St Laurence's Church, also five minutes' walk from the hotel.

The Feathers Hotel received a £2 million refurbishment in 2019, with the bedrooms reopening in December. The Feathers Tea Room provides a selection of freshly baked scones, cakes and savouries prepared using local ingredients, while the Plume@Feathers Restaurant serves more local and seasonal produce alongside their carefully curated wine list. Both the Tea Room and Restaurant have maintained plenty of traditional décor to admire, while being refreshed for the 21st century.

All 42 bedrooms have been refurbished to a high standard. Classic rooms feature an ensuite bathroom, king-size bed and a lounge area.

We stopped for a two night break in this this historic inn. The refurbishment has been done to a very high standard. The rooms were beautifully decorated and well equipt. We ate in the restaurant the first night and the service was superb as was the food. We also had a cream tea in the bar area which was delicious. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Thank you to all the staff.

We really had a fantastic time with you and thanks are due to all the staff. The only comment I would make is that we were in room 124 and my wife really missed a mirror in the main room and also we found it strange that there was no hanging space for clothes. This didn't matter to us as we only had casual clothes but if we were going to a wedding we would want to hand dresses and suits somewhere.

Staff were exceptional and gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble (even warming up a pain au chocolate that had gone cold). Food was some of the best we ever had - cooked to perfection, hot and fresh tasting. It was great to hear the barkeep asking me for feedback about my drink so he could look to continue to improve the cocktails he made. The hotel is obviously very old but there is a good balance between the wonderful antiquities around the property and the rooms which are very nicely furnished in a modern style.
Other Comments
The only slight negatives were: parking is quite tight, lots of stairs between rooms due the the hotel spreading across multiple buildings, room was lovely and warm but there was no way to get fresh air into the room as the windows were seized shut,

Wonderful staff, great room, excellent food.
Other Comments
I thought the builders had skimped on some of the work in the expensive major refurbishment: doors not closing properly, no doorstops, poor carpentry and scratched paintwork. Finger plates to switches should be loosened before painting round. All reception and waiting staff get top marks for professionalism.
