Overview

Damson Dene Hotel is in the Lyth Valley, a 10-minute drive from the shores of Windermere -- the largest lake in England -- which is surrounded by fells and villages.

The property is a 10-minute drive from the town of Bowness, where you'll be able to board a cruise over to Lakeside (or vice versa). The town is also home to The World of Beatrix Potter. Now a National Trust property, the author bought this with the royalties from her books.

Whitbarrow Nature Reserve, which is known for its limestone and woodland landscape, is around 15 minutes' drive away, and the town of Kendal, best known for its mint cake, is a 20-minute drive.

There are plenty of fell-walking routes close by, including Orrest Head, which is around 20 minutes' drive. This hill on the eastern shore of Windermere offers views the length of the lake and is featured in Alfred Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland -- it was the first Lake District fell the author climbed.

The property sits within landscaped gardens with a pond. There's a log fire and comfy lounges in the lobby, so guests can unwind while reading the newspapers and magazines on offer.

The hotel's Heron View Restaurant serves dishes made with local produce -- many of the ingredients are grown in the hotel's kitchen garden. The property also has a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and a mini gym. Wi-Fi is free throughout and dogs are welcome.

Swimming pool closed, building a bit tired looking and staff could have been more friendly

Staff were all excellent. Great breakfasts and evening meals.
Other Comments
Corridors look tired. Maintenance work being carried out so lot of drilling 5 metres from our room at 9.30 am! Suppose it has to be done sometime but perhaps at a time when more likely to be away from the hotel. Place does need a fresh coat of paint and furniture in communal areas perhaps replacing.

The staff were all very lovely and helpful and are an asset to the hotel.
Other Comments
I thought the hotel was a quite tired looking and the rooms were very small and old fashioned and there was certainly no ‘wow factor’ upon our arrival. The staff are the hotel’s strongest selling point, and went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

When staff were told we were checking out a day early they offered another room, and then gave us vouchers for meals that can be used at th other chain restaurants. No sign of manager at all. The ground staff were lovely.
Other Comments
Room not cleaned. Cobwebs in corners and ceiling, thick dust on four poster. Very uncomfortable bed. Dust in extractor fan in bathroom, old hole where fixture had been in bath. Spa bath in room not working, when reported to staff informed that they knew it didn't work but and wouldn't be fixing it. Room generally was shabby, bird excrement on inside of window. On second day cleaner left old bag of rubbish on top of drawers and cleaning solution but hadn't actually cleaned. While outside saw rat running into cellar. Food was standard, heard a lot of other guests complaining. When leaving the local ducks had ripped open the rubbish bags which had been left around the bins on the ground.

The bar was well managed/stocked with a good variety of beers and wines.
Other Comments
The rooms were cold. The gym is neglected and the staff were not available to explain anything. The pool is tiny so you can't have good swim exercise. I was overcharged and had to challenge this on checkout.
