Overview

Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards at an extra cost.

There are three dining options at this hotel. The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

Conservatory dining. Close proximity to St Ives. Coastal pathway outside. Friendly and attentive restaurant staff.

Focus on new build lodges and lack of attention to hotel rooms and facilities. Overpriced if not for Travelzoo offer. Not a four star by any stretch.

The dining room, and conservatory are beautiful rooms and the food was excellent. Some of the tiling was cracked in reception otherwise it was very nice. The bar area still appeared to have the original Victorian tiles which were not in good condition. The spa looked very nice.
Other Comments
The size of the room. It was a garden room supposedly , there was a small bit of greenery but the majority was taken up with outbuildings, including a cellar ,it was quite noisy when re filling with barrels early in the morning. It had an additional six foot staircase going up into the room, which was highly dangerous as it ended only two feet from the side of the bed. The en suit was minute.there were no grab handles at all. We changed rooms and the second was marginally better . These were the smallest rooms I have ever stayed in,even smaller than cruise ship standard staterooms. I have photos to show. There is no lift, so in the second room we had to walk up two flites of steep stairs. The car parking is a mess ,in fact there was no room until we double parked and went to reception.the swimming pool was very small . They are in the process of completing a large build comprising lodges and suites and a conference centre which is right in front of the hotel in the beach. There were builders vehicles and equipment which you had to walk through to the beach which was approached by two more flights of stairs, the steps of which are quite steep.

The staff were attentive and friendly and the location was gorgeous.
Other Comments
It was a shame that we weren’t informed about the building work that was taking place. Also our garden view superior room overlooked a large ducting vent and a few flower pots!!

The food was fantastic and all the members of staff were helpful and attentive without being too forward
Other Comments
They are having more than minor building works. A complete block of apartments directly in front of the restaurants views of the beach. Also the beach was described as private, it is not private and had hundreds of tourists across the beach with a lot of inflatables, wind breaks and cooking going on

Everyone was lovely and the whole day/night was beautiful. Our sea/garden view was very obscured (mind you we didn’t go to look out the window, get out and enjoy Cornwall)
