Overview

Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards at an extra cost.

There are three dining options at this hotel. The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

  • "There aren't many spas in the UK where you can sit in a sauna and watch a pod of dolphins swim across a bay, but this is one of them" -- The Good Spa Guide

We were contacted during our journey there and asked to transfer our booking to their sister hotel or to take an apartment as they said there was a plumbing issue with our room. I said i would like to take a look online at what they were offering but the alternative room was smaller and there were no photographs available of the apartmen. We decided against this idea as both venues were approx 2 miles away from the hotel. When we arrived we were provided with a delux double room with a sea view and not the room we had booked. This room was significantly smaller and had a damp patch on the ceiling. The lampshades were unravelling and the bathroom was small. We were tired after our long journey and although I explained we had booked a superior room, they said the room we had been given was an upgrade. We didn't think this was the case and to he honest were disappointed.

The wonderful location right by a fantastically clean blue flag beach. The food was of a high standard and all the staff were very friendly. A lovely hotel!

There are, however, extensive building works directly in front of the hotel. These are more Carbis Bay Hotel apartments etc. I was lucky to be staying over a bank holiday when all work was suspended. I think looking out onto a huge working building site would be more than I could put up with if I was staying any other time in probably the next year!
