Overview

Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which has a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards for an extra cost.

The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

We were expecting a small room having paid such a reasonable price for the package but when we arrived we were allocated a junior suite which was fantastic. The hotel was beautiful and the meal delicious. We will certainly be looking for another deal on Travel Zoo for this hotel.

Room and bath very small--superior ??? Food overpriced and poor---we both sent our main meals back. Not told of extensive renovations being carried out.

The location is great, however, the owners are currently completing the building of a block of apartments on the beach front which, once complete, will really spoil the view of the hotel from the beach and vice versa. I would think that some of the rooms that have a sea view now will lose that view when the new blocks are complete

The bed in our room wasn't that comfortable, it was a queen size with two single matress' rather than one. We were very disappointed with our check out. There were additional items added to our bill that weren't ours. It was quite clear to see that they weren't ours because they were for items purchased at the same time but in different restaurants in the hotel. Rather than dealing with this after we had left, the receptionist had us wait in reception for at least 10 minutes while she checked it out with the restaurant Manager. For such an exclusive hotel as this, she should have accepted our word, after all they did take a scan of our credit card when we arrived which is their standard practice, rather than keep us waiting.

The service was great. We did have an issue with one of the meals which was not great. Our comments were fed back to the manager and chef which were followed up the next day when we checked out. It was a positive response to a disappointing meal. We were pleased that it had been dealt with.

There were major building works in progress which will impact the beach in future. The access road is very narrow and very steep.
