The 4-star Hallmark Hotel Cambridge is set in 200 acres of countryside and is a 15-minute drive from Cambridge, which Lonely Planet describes as "abounding with exquisite architecture" and "oozing history and tradition".

Newmarket Racecourse, which dates back to the 17th century, is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. The Imperial War Museum Duxford -- Britain's largest aviation museum, housing a remarkable collection of 180 aircraft from Europe and the United States -- is also 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel has a leisure club with an indoor swimming pool, a steam room, a sauna and a gym. There is also an 18-hole golf course and tennis courts.

The hotel's grill restaurant uses seasonal, local ingredients and serves dishes inspired by classic British favourites. We like the sound of the barbecue pork belly with maple-roasted sweet potato to start, followed by the fresh mussels steamed in apple cider. The property also has a garden and a terrace area.

"The contemporary-style bedrooms are smartly decorated and equipped with a good range of useful facilities," says The AA Hotel Guide 2019. Wi-Fi is free.

The included dinner and bottle of wine were fine. We enjoyed use of the pool. Our stay was good value, just not very impressive. Pastries were good on the breakfast buffet. Aaron (dining room staff) was helpful & friendly in the morning.

The bed was much too hard and very uncomfortable. The duvet & pillow were flat & unyielding. The paint was flaking off the bathroom ceiling. The breakfast buffet looked sad - congealing beans, solid scrambled eggs, open cereal containers with cross contamination. At dinner it was disappointing to be served by 5+ different members of staff. More desserts were sold out than available. The red cabbage was more sugar than any other flavour. And why does anyone have to braise a lettuce?

Location on bus route into Cambridge and short drive from Anglesey Abbey which we were visiting. All staff were unfailingly polite and helpful.

Treatment rooms in the Spa were really not more than cupboard spaces and noisy next to pool changing room but staff were lovely. Free car park is great and available even after room check out.

The food was very good. The waiters took orders for starter and main from us and then returned to say neither was available. Not good. Offered dessert menu before mains were served. Weird. Breakfast beautiful and one of the best served hotel breakfasts we can recall.

Had upgraded to Executive Room. Heating system wasn't working but we weren't told. Electric radiator stood independently have pitiful heat so requested a second. Took over an hour to arrive and bathroom still unheated so too cold to shower. Requested change of room or check out immediately and demanded refund. Told no room available as hotel fully booked, also told no Duty Manager available. Mysteriously within 30 minutes an alternative room was found, as was the Duty Manager. Complementary wine with dinner did nothing to improve our view of our experience.

Good location just off the M11. Staff were very friendly and efficient, both at reception and in the restaurant. Food was good. Linen and towels were very clean. Good value for the discounted deal, but would not have been happy had we paid full price.
Other Comments
Hotel was in need of redecorating as looked old and tired, particularly the bathroom in our room. The spa area was not a nice environment, as the whirlpool was far too small and there were old looking tiles on the floor which made the pools of water look stagnant. The restaurant was lacking in atmosphere and got very busy, noisy and hurried at breakfast.
