“The view’s the thing here”, says The Sheffield Star about The Lathkil Hotel, and it’s hard to disagree. Set high in the Peak District National Park, the hotel overlooks Lathkill Dale and has impressive vistas from the restaurant, garden and front bedrooms.

It’s a great spot for rambling or cycling or just generally exploring the area. The market town of Bakewell is only two miles away and worth a stop for one of its legendary tarts. Buxton and its famous opera house are a 25-minute drive away, while Chatsworth House, the mother of all stately homes, is 20 minutes away by car.

Location is a key attraction, but the pub, which has been there since the 1820s, also draws real ale lovers -- The Good Pub Guide commends its ever-changing cask ales and “unpretentious” ambience. The food is down to earth, with prices to match -- expect dishes such as Derbyshire steak and kidney pie and zesty orange-roasted salmon. Breakfast is “hearty” (The Good Pub Guide), with local sausages, eggs, black pudding and smoked bacon taking centre stage. There’s a lovely patio for al fresco pints in good weather, and a pub quiz is held every Wednesday evening from 9pm.

There are only four rooms, all of which were refurbished in 2012 and have DVD players, mini fridges and tea and coffee-making facilities. WiFi is free and dogs are allowed in certain rooms (arrange in advance). Book a room at the front to access more of those views.
