Overlooking Tankerton’s pebbly beach, a mile from Whitstable town centre, the Marine Hotel is a reasonably priced option on Kent’s north coast. The property was recently refurbished and Wi-Fi, breakfast and parking are all included with an overnight stay.
Whitstable itself is a pleasant walk past the colourful beach huts on the shoreline, and plethora of independent shops and galleries that the town is known for. Make sure you visit the harbour on the weekend to walk around the market, with stalls ranging from fresh fish to local artists peddling their wares. Whitstable Castle and Gardens are within walking distance of the town centre, and Canterbury is an easy day trip. Herne Bay and Ramsgate Beaches are also nearby, and a trip in late July is highly recommended when the Whitstable Oyster Festival is held.
The hotel itself is owned by Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewery, and – as is to be expected – has a good range of local ale and pub classics on the menu in the bar. The restaurant is more formal but with tasty local seafood dishes – try the paprika roasted monkfish, with a white wine and mussel cream sauce, or the local oysters served with lemon vinaigrette. Breakfast in the morning is freshly cooked with good coffee.
You will notice the influence of the sea throughout, with nautical touches in the bar and bedrooms. Double Rooms do not have sea views but you can expect a good-size room with free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities. Family rooms, which can cater for up to two adults and two children are also available. Upgrade to a Sea View room for those ocean vistas, and to a Superior Sea View to take advantage of a private balcony.
