With views of the River Ouse, and York’s attractions just 10 minutes’ walk away, the Park Inn by Radisson York City Centre is a well-priced option in this notoriously expensive city.
York Theatre Royal, York Minster (the city’s cathedral) and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within easy walking distance, as are the historic city walls. And when you’re finished exploring York’s Roman, Viking and medieval history (really?), you can drive out of the city to the spectacular Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors National Parks, both about an hour away, or to the coast -- both Scarborough and Bridlington are a little over an hour away.
There are plenty of places to eat in York, but if you’re at the hotel, the RGB Bar & Grill serves uncomplicated British fare such as steaks, battered haddock with fries and chicken, ham and leek pie. The breakfast buffet is stocked with eggs, bacon, sausages and beans, as well as cereal, juice, pastries, coffee and toast. There is no gym, but guests get free access to a nearby health club.
Rooms are basic and on the small side (there’s little storage) but are cheerfully decorated, with tea and coffee-making facilities, ironing boards and free WiFi. Upgrade to a larger Superior Room for complimentary breakfast, bottled water and fruit, as well as bathrobes and slippers. Some rooms have river views with balconies. Some guests have mentioned late-night reveller noise at weekends -- ask for a quiet room if this is a concern.
