Why We Love It

  • This unique hotel is part of a 1,800-acre National Trust estate in Suffolk
  • You can borrow bikes to explore the grounds, play a game of tennis, or unwind in the indoor swimming pool and beauty treatment rooms
  • The 2-AA-Rosette Frederick's Restaurant serves top-notch modern cuisine

Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, The Ickworth is a "rejuvenating retreat" (The Daily Telegraph) in the village of Horringer in Suffolk. The Grade I-listed Palladian building sits in extensive grounds roamed by deer, on an estate that was once owned by the aristocratic Hervey family and the Earl of Bristol. Today it is home to a hotel and a living museum run by the National Trust.

You can explore the 1,800 acres of parkland and play tennis or croquet in the gardens, or explore the National Trust house with a free pass from reception. Children can burn off energy in the fairy garden, with its trampoline and Wendy house.

Families can borrow mini wellies and there's a choice of 400 DVDs at reception, with daily film showings in the cinema. There is also an Ofsted-registered crèche (£10 per child, per two hours), a baby-listening service and babysitters (extra charges apply). Older children and adults can hang out in the games room, which has PlayStations, Wii consoles and Xbox 360s, as well as table tennis and table football.

The fine-dining Frederick's Restaurant overlooks the Italianate gardens and is adults-only in the evenings, whereas the Conservatory restaurant serves more informal fare including pizzas, steak and antipasti platters.

Bedrooms are split between the east wing of the manor and the lodge, which is half a mile from the main house. The restaurant and treatment rooms are in the east wing, and the indoor swimming pool is in an external building. Dogs can stay in some rooms for £15 per dog, per night.

You can try your hand at clay-pigeon shooting at Wild Tracks Off-Road Activity Park, spend an afternoon horse-riding at Barrow Hall Stables or fish at Larkwood Trout Fishery (all within 25 minutes' drive of the hotel; extra charges apply). The market town of Bury St Edmunds is a 10-minute drive away and Cambridge is less than 50 minutes' drive.

Really nice hotel, easy to get to and lovely food. Seemed very child friendly and the sitting rooms were comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The staff and service were excellent except for breakfast which took ages to arrive. I would love to stay here again but it would be too expensive unless it was a Travelzoo deal, we would love to take children with us but again that could only happen with a discounted price.

Mostly the evening meal at Fredericks. On the first night, the steak was very tough and had to be returned, when presented again there was no change. On the second night, the starter of smoked salmon was very minimal. Considering the cost of each item on the menu it was not up to 4* catering. Likewise with the breakfast in the conservatory, which was buffet style in the hallway. We complained about this stating that this service did not come up to 4* service and noticed the next day that it was changed to waitress service, which was much better. On another point, the mattress on the bed in our very large bedroom, was a lot to be desired, with springs pressing into my wife's side, so we had to ask for a topper which was supplied.

Perfect for families, fantastic staff and delicious home made food. They really couldn’t do enough for us and our little ones. Great added extras too like free bike hire, use of the cinema and swimming. We will definitely be returning!

The only thing I change was the bed - Is was very firm and I had to ask for an extra duvet to put on top.
