Set at the end of a long drive, Ickworth Hotel is a "beautifully grand house" (Red) that was once owned by the Hervey family and the Earl of Bristol, and today is shared by a living museum run by the National Trust.

The hotel's 27 bedrooms are split between the East Wing and the Lodge, which is around 0.5 miles away from the main building. The restaurant and spa are set in the building's East Wing and guests receive complimentary entry to the rest of the property and 1,800-acre grounds that are waiting to be explored. Guests can try clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, fishing, tennis and croquet, and children are well catered for with an adventure playground, fairy garden and trampoline to play on. Inside, there is an indoor pool and sauna, plus a small spa in the cellar. Further afield, the market town of Bury St Edmunds is a 10-minute drive and Cambridge is 45 minutes away by car.

Families can expect mini wellies to borrow, boxes of toys on every floor, a children's high tea every afternoon, and film shows every evening at 6pm. There is also an Ofsted-registered crèche (all children are entitled to a free 2-hour session each day), complimentary baby listening service and babysitters on hand (fees apply). For older children, there's a games room with Playstations, Wii consoles and Xbox 360s, plus table tennis and table football, and sports clubs during the school holidays.

The bedrooms have a relaxed country-house décor with jazzy touches, enormous beds and free Wi-Fi. No two rooms are the same but you can expect garden views, good soundproofing, DVD and CD players, free bottles of water, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Reception has more than 400 DVDs to borrow and the nursery can collect younger children for breakfast on a Sunday morning to give parents a longer lie in (pre-arrangement necessary). Dogs are also welcome in some rooms, on request.

The upmarket Frederick's Restaurant overlooks the Italian gardens and is adult-only in the evenings. Try dishes such as the crab, lobster and crayfish cocktail, pheasant kiev with smoked bacon risotto, and Sicilian lemon tart with blood orange sorbet. The Conservatory restaurant serves more informal fare including pizzas, steak and salads, and puts on an earlier dinner for children.
