Overview

The Quayside Hotel was formerly a group of six fishermen's cottages dating back to the 18th century, overlooking Brixham Harbour and Torbay. It is an ideal base for exploring South Devon, known as the English Riviera, "so-called for its mild climate, long sandy beaches, and prevalence of palm trees", says the World Travel Guide.

Nearby are the picturesque naval town of Dartmouth, the seaside resort town of Torbay and Agatha Christie's riverside holiday home (Greenway). You'll be staying a 3-minute walk from Brixham town centre – described by The Guardian as "beautiful all year round" and home to "Devon's finest seafood".

Make sure you visit one of the many art galleries, the Golden Hind replica of explorer Sir Francis Drake's ship, and Berry Head nature reserve, which connects visitors to the Coast Path and some 22 miles of trails. Goodrington Sands Beach, Paignton Beach and Paignton Zoo are all within a 15-minute drive away.

Back at the hotel, the AA-Rosette Quayside Restaurant showcases fresh local produce including fish caught in the harbour -- red mullet, sea bass, pollock and wild salmon, as well as Elberry Cove mussels and River Dart oysters have all been on the menu. Afterwards, have a nightcap in the local favourite Ernie Lister Pub, which has regular live entertainment.

The hotel's bedrooms are all uniquely decorated with a seaside theme and work from Brixham artists and photographers. Upgrade to a Luxury Sea View Double Room, for more of those views -- you can choose between balconies or a bay window seat and a 4-poster or a king-size bed.

From the press:

  • "Its kitchen makes good use of the bounty on its doorstep" -- The AA Hotel Guide

  • "If you are looking for hotels with unique character and 'old world charm', you'll find the Quayside Hotel delightful" -- The English Riviera

Our room was at the top of the hotel and very small. However, for the amount we paid with Travelzoo we could not complain.

Spacious bedroom, airy dining room and entertainment in bar.
Other Comments
Disappointed with the Lobster Thermidor we ordered. It was rather tasteless and ridiculously overpriced for a three star hotel.

Make sure you know what the offer includes. They forgot our complimentary Prosecco so we didn’t have it.
