South Seas Island Resort is approximately an hour’s drive from Fort Myers and the Southwest Florida International Airport. Cab fare from the airport to the resort is approximately $100.
Sprawling across the entire northern third of Captiva Island, South Seas Island resort “feels as lush as its name suggests” (Fodor’s). Two and a half miles of pristine white-sand beaches hug this 330-acre nature preserve, offering a quiet and secluded oasis just an hour’s drive from Fort Myers.
Trolley shuttles ensure guests can easily traverse the whopping acreage, zipping through the property’s ever-green mangrove forests to the numerous on-site dining outlets and amenities. Accommodations vary across the grounds, from marina-side hotel rooms to quaint condominiums and cottages, spacious private homes and villas.
Before taking part in the resort’s copious on-site activities and amenities, head to the seashore to hunt for unique souvenirs on the property’s superb shell-hunting sands. Resident manatees and dolphins are often spotted splashing away in the nearby waters, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled not only for shells.
Tee up at “one of the most picturesque 9-holers anywhere” (Frommer’s), book a treatment at the 4,000-square-foot state-of-the-art spa or take the kids to the family interactive center to enjoy an abundance of kid-friendly activities. Water sports, tennis courts, bikes and a massive pool complex are also available for guests wishing to stay active throughout their stay.
From the press:
“Water on three sides give the resort a delicious seclusion” – Fodor’s
“Its Gulfside golf course is one of the most picturesque 9-holers anywhere” – Frommer’s

South Seas Island Resort is absolutely beautiful BUT please be advised that there are different classes of accommodations. We stayed at the Bayside villas which are old and rundown. We requested renovated villas--which we got, but even with the updates, they are still in rough shape. The Bayside and Tennis villas are at the bottom of the price range--but still expensive. I was disappointed in the rooms but I should have checked it out before booking as the reviews clearly indicate this issue. Housekeeping does a lazy job cleaning just the basics; the light switches, tops of doors, baseboards, cabinet doors, etc. are filthy. I can't imagine 'the elite' tolerating this neglect in the high-end villas but it was the case here. I'll admit I'm particular about cleanliness so maybe it won't bother others.
Other Comments
South Seas should really either put the table set over a rug OR add felt pads to the chair legs--very annoying especially when the room above you is active while you're trying to sleep.

Villas were not equipped for a family of 5, even though they state they can accommodate 6. Kitchen dinnerware was VERY limited, and cooking utensils lacked many necessary items (e.g., cookie sheet). No towels available at the villa pools. Toilets were constantly running. Showers were lacking water pressure and one was totally unusable. Most resort workers were attentive and helpful, but some acted like they did not want to be bothered. Drink prices were excessive ($9.00 for an iced tea).

Captiva Island is remote. There aren't enough dining options available in the resort. The resort was practically deserted. We enjoy walking, but the resort doesn't have sidewalks along the 3 mile length from the south to the north end of the resort. We were able to walk the beach from end to end and back, but there were no exits along the 2.5 mile length. The TV service was out of the 80's. No high def, no digital (perhaps analog). The weather station wasn't even video. It was a snowy picture with audio.

The rooms or units were very tired and out dated. We actually complained with first room which was particularly bad and had musty smell. I was adamant at check in for them to put us in updated unit as I had read some reviews. They said they were not available. They also said because we booked through travel zoo that they were not flexible but we complained and did get a better yet still tired unit. We also had inadequate house keeping where as they did not change sheets or clean kitchen and left coffee pot with old coffee in it. Because we were at beach there was sand in sheets. WE complained and that aspect improved.

Had a really good time despite it being one of the coldest days since previous winter, brrr since I live nearby here in FL. Ended up golfing which was a nice little executive course with all par 3 holes. Price was ok, except for the golf cart fee, $40 a piece. That was steep. All the staff was gracious and helpful. We ate at Doc Ford's mostly which was good. Pricey breakfast, but had a $25 resort credit which helped. All in all, very nice place with a nice crew of employees. I didn't put the term :resort" in my head My fault. No $ needed here....like a cruise ship on dry land. I'm not a fan. Also, as with a cruise, you pay the resort prices and get a nice bill at the end. I need a few more bars and restaurants to choose from personally. A $42 breakfast for two (not incl. tip) (two eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee each) is a bit much.
When we first entered the room the smell of perfumed disinfectant chocked my wife and me. It took literally 6 or so hours to air out the room.

I have traveled to South Seas multiple times, often in groups as I have endorsed the resort to others. Will likely go elsewhere on my future trips to Sanibel/Captiva. My daughter was in a cast and not allowed to use the slides, the main reason we go to that resort. The slide rules are posted in 4 different areas, so initially it was difficult to figure it out even though she used the slides a few times given a long-sleeve UV top she had that some of the attendants missed. Imagine her disappointment that initially she could go and then no more for the rest of our stay. My objection extends to not being given the opportunity to sign a waiver of responsibility for the resort if she was to be hurt. That blind and all or none mentality is unfortunate and self-serving. It’s too bad as otherwise our stays over several years have been positive. As it is, her cast comes off today and it could have been removed a week ago - we did not foresee such stubbornness and please do not aim to spin it as it being for her safety. It was because of your fear of attorneys, plain and simple. Otherwise a waiver would have been allowed. Thank you nonetheless for the positive past stays.

This compound was beautiful, the villa/ building was dated and could use a through cleaning. The room itself was clean but the paint was peeling above the shower, the fan on the lanai needed cleaning, there were cobwebs on the outside top of the door.
We enjoyed our stay however had we not gotten the deal from travel zoo I would have been upset. 1st: i requested an early check in and got to the hotel only to be told our room wasn’t ready at 2pm, she said it would only be 30 minutes but was almost an hour and 30 minutes. 2. On day of check out housekeeping knocked on our door at 9:30am despite the do not disturb sign on the door, we do not have to check out until 11, I was pretty angry about that. 3. We were told it is a cashless/cardless resort however both the ship store and provisions store took cash/card. 4. Everything closes between 9-10. If you would like a drink/coffee after a later dinner you better bring your own. 5. I would suggest if staying in a villa that you stop at a grocery store before serving as EVERYTHING is exhorbantly overpriced at the resort!!! I don’t mind pathing for things however they do t give you much information and then lock you in once you arrive. 6. When I called the night before check out to request we be able to check out at noon not 11, I was told to call back in the morning t see if that was possible, they were not very accommodating. Also each time I called the resort from the time of booking to check out each person who answered the phone was not overly friendly.
Again, we enjoyed Captiva and the resort, had it not been for the excellent travel zoo deal we would not spend the money to go back.

The cleaning people stood outside of our building one day in a golf cart and spoke loudly to the cleaning ladies that were standing upstairs in the building. They spoke back and forth for about 15 minutes, Too loud, woke us up and we had to go outside to see if someone was fighting.

Alot of teenagers driving golf carts that we're under 16. Late at night, we heard screeching tires, I look out window and a couple of kids on golf carts almost hit each other. They should not be allowed without parents.

Our villa room was certainly not up to resort standards, nor was the pool in our complex. While everything was in passable working order in our room, it appeared as though the unit had been neglected for quite some time. Outdated furnishings. Caulking needing to be done almost everywhere. Air Conditioner had a hard time keeping the humidity out of the unit. Balcony furniture seriously outdated and metal table was sticky to the touch. NOT RESORT STANDARDS. When we commented on this at checkout the only response was, "these units are individually owned and we have no control over them." Very disappointing.

Having several dining options at the resort itself was a big plus, given that Captiva is an island with limited dining choices, and it's not always easy to go someplace off the island. Also, the staff at the resort were amazingly helpful, friendly, and knowledgable.

Our room had many issues of things broken, not working and filthy floors. We worked with a very helpful manager who did what she could to remedy some of the problems. Had it not been for Amanda, we would have never thought of going back. Now we know if we would make a return visit, what rooms not to stay in!

All amenities and beaches available within walking distance or by frequently available shuttle.
Unit was very nice except for location.
Other Comments
The room specified 'screened balcony' but there was like 6 inches between the door wall and screen.
Could not see the bay from the 'Bayside villa', only the small marina which was ringed in by thick vegetation.
First floor unit was very cold due to weather and being on top of open parking garage.

Most of the units are owned privately and rented out through the resort. Each is different, and some are kept up better than others. The beach villa we stayed in, #2312, was very nice with plenty of kitchen ware, nice furnishings, and tasteful artwork.

Villa was not in great condition, furniture in poor condition and the unit needed more lighting. The bathroom was very small. The TV was not terrific & no info about tv stations, etc. Appliances were outdated. There are not many activities for older adults. Only one restaurant onsite serving breakfast.
Room key stopped working, needed a battery. The elevator stopped working but was fixed promptly.

Upon booking, $199.00 was posted to my credit card as I expected. When I arrived, this would left an outstanding balance of $ 886.58 (Original booking of $1,085.58 -$199.00). I also had a $100.00 resort credit. So, the resort proceeds to place a hold on my credit card for $1,910.00 on 11/21. I departed at 9:35 am on 11/25 and the resort has still not settled my account as of today, 11/28.. This is totally unacceptable !
Will not waste my time on complaining about the 1980's style room to which I was assigned.

The place is so relaxing and gorgeous! There is plenty to do but you don't have to schedule yourself out either. We saw dolphins every day, got to fish, play golf, tennis, a nice run and walks on the beach. it was so amazing.

only one slight complaint, the servers at the pool were a little grumpy, two days in a row. I am not sure if it is because they had to work a holiday weekend but it was fine, just thought they would be a little more friendly.
One suggestion is to leave the pool area open later, it is so beautiful on the water, they could add firepits and let families hang out together at night there.
but overall all, I didn't want the time there to end and I can't wait to go back.
