Looking for tranquil grounds to get a little lost in? Domaine Château de Faucon might be the place for you. Surrounded by a 100-hectare park, the magnificent 17th-century château in France’s Ardennes region sits 3.6km outside the riverside town of Donchery, not far from the Belgian border. The family-run luxury lodging comes complete with crenellated towers, a manor with a chapel, stream and pond -- a proper fairytale setting.
The gorgeous grounds make this hotel a destination in its own right. There are bridle paths for exploring on foot or horseback (yes, you can hire these at the chateau). Other on-site activities include mini-golf, golf and tennis. But if you want to explore, it’s a pretty part of the world -- and, more importantly, it’s only an hour or so from Reims, the heart of the Champagne region.
A gourmet restaurant with a leafy terrace serves up seasonal and regional cuisine (it’s closed for Saturday lunch, Sunday evening and all-day Monday), while the bar has an extensive wine and Champagne list. Breakfast is available (charges apply).
Most of the individually decorated rooms and suites have contemporary furnishings, but a few are vintage-style. The rooms within the castle (rather than the house) are extra special, some of them opening onto moats and gardens, and many have views of the park. All have the usual mod-cons you’d expect from luxury accommodation -- free WiFi, cable TV -- but with scenery like this and ample outdoor activities, you’re unlikely to need those.
