Surrounded by some of Melbourne's lushest green spaces, yet within the Central Business District, the hip boutique Blackman Hotel -- part of the Art Series group -- is in an enviable location. Named after Sydney figurative artist Charles Blackman, whose gentle, dream-like work is displayed throughout, the hotel aims to stimulate its guests' creativity, even offering art kits as part of the family package.
The hotel is a 10-minute walk inside the adjacent Royal Park to the stunning Royal Botanical Gardens, home to over 12,000 species of plants and a sanctuary for native wildlife. Here you can explore the Australian Rainforest Walk and picnic by the Ornamental Lake. Other places of note within the massive park are the Shrine of Remembrance, National Herbarium and Observatory, Queen Victoria Gardens and floral clock on St Kilda Road. There are also two nearby lakes studded with picturesque small islands.
The Blackman is also hot on sustainability, with bikes and eco-friendly smart cars available for hire (AUS$50 a day, approximately£24). The hotel is within Zone 1 and has good public transport links, including Flinders Street Railway Station and South Yarra Railways Station, both within a 25-minute walk. You can purchase travel tickets from reception.
The hotel has two popular St Kilda Road eateries, French café and patisserie Fleur Depot de Pain and Italian restaurant Classico. Each of the hotel's 209 spacious suites features balconies and designer furnishings, with Art Series signature beds. The suites range in size from 1- to 2-bed studios with state-of-the art kitchens to luxury penthouses, residences and group accommodation options. Check out the great options for families. The art kits are a guaranteed hit with the kids.
