Overview

Alveston House Hotel, a distinguished Georgian manor surrounded by walled gardens, is an award-winning (2011 and 2013 Best Small Hotel in Bristol), independent hotel. Dating back to 1797, the property was previously a private home owned by Captain Frank Barnwell, an aeroplane designer who piloted the first aircraft in Scotland in 1910.

The hotel is about a half-hour drive from Bristol's key sights, including Brunel's SS Great Britain, the Clifton Suspension Bridge and M Shed, a museum that tells the city's history. The Mall at Cribbs Causeway shopping centre is a 14-minute drive away. Tyntesfield, a spectacular Gothic Revival mansion set within walled gardens and parkland, now managed by the National Trust, is around a half-hour drive from the hotel. Described by Lonely Planet as "a fairy-tale mansion bristling with pinnacles and turrets, brimful of sweeping staircases and cavernous, antique-filled rooms", it is well worth a visit. Alveston is close to the M4 and M5, offering easy access to London, the Southwest coast and the Midlands.

The hotel’s Carriages Restaurant holds an AA Rosette for its classic cooking, with an emphasis on home-grown herbs and locally sourced produce, and a good provision of gluten-free options. Dishes include homemade spinach and mascarpone ravioli, and rack of lamb with fondant potato and fennel. The restaurant has an equestrian theme -- the hotel’s owner, Julie Camm, is a passionate carriage driver who competes for England internationally. A more casual lunch is served in the conservatory. Afternoon tea is a traditional affair of finger sandwiches and fruit scones with jam and clotted cream. It can be taken in the gardens in the summer or by the fire in the lounge during winter.

Rooms are well kept and comfortable. Superior and Deluxe Rooms have been given a bit of an update, but Standard rooms are more old-fashioned. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
