San Giorgio Palace Hotel
Why We Love This Hotel
- Modern hotel set in a 19th-century building
- Ragusa Ibla (the old town) is on your doorstep
- Within easy reach of plenty of restaurants
- Rooms have satellite TVs (including SKY channels)
Sitting in a UNESCO World Heritage Site this 4-star hotel, a converted 19th-century building with panoramic views of Ragusa Ibla, could have chosen to trade on its history, but the San Giorgio Palace is instead bright, modern and comfortable. You access the hotel through a small landscaped garden and along a stunning 33-metre hallway before taking a lift up to reception.
Ragusa Ibla is “is a joy to wander,” says Lonely Planet, “its labyrinthine lanes weaving through rock-grey palazzi to open onto beautiful, sun-drenched piazzas”. The town was devastated by an earthquake in 1693, then rebuilt -- there are plenty of old churches and piazzas to explore and Giardino Ibleo Park is a 2-minute walk. If you want to explore the island a little, the historic cities of Syracuse and Catania are about 90 minutes away, and the ancient archaeological site of Agrigento is a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
The hotel’s restaurant is open in the morning and serves a traditional Italian breakfast with homemade pastries, cakes and brioches, as well as teas and cappuccinos. There’s no shortage of restaurants nearby for lunch and dinner. The hotel has a bar/lounge area and a garden and free WiFi is free throughout.
The modern rooms at the hotel are air-conditioned and have satellite TVs (including SKY channels) and views of the surrounding valley.
