Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is within walking distance of St James' Park and Grainger Market
  • There is a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse on site
  • The Quayside, Sage Gateshead and the BALTIC Centre are around 20 minutes' walk away

Overview

With an enviable city-centre location, Hotel Indigo Newcastle is a modern property in Grainger Town that takes inspiration from the surrounding Neoclassical buildings.

The hotel is less than five minutes' walk from Newcastle railway station and Grainger Market, a Grade I-listed covered market that was the largest in Europe when it was built. Sage Gateshead, one of Tyneside's premier concert destinations, and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art are around 20 minutes' walk away on the Quayside.

Newcastle Castle, the medieval fortification that gave the city its name, is 10 minutes away on foot; head to the roof for great views of the city and the River Tyne. Quayside, an area with popular bars and restaurants, is a 15-minute walk away.

We recommend a trip to Jesmond Dene, a steep-sided river valley in the north of the city. You can follow the Ouseburn as it flows south through the valley, stop for pictures by its waterfall and ruined water mill, and maybe spot a kingfisher or red squirrel along the way. Start your walk from the Castles Farm Road entrance -- around 20 minutes from the hotel by bus or Metro.

The hotel's on-site Marco Pierre White Steakhouse serves classic British dishes. There is also a cocktail bar. Items from the mini bar are included in the price, and there's 24-hour room service and an on-site gym.

The staff are friendly & welcoming, the rooms large & well equipped. Location fantastic as it is so close to the railway station & the complimentary Prosecco was well presented in an ice bucket with glasses on our arrival. Such a shame about the standard & quality of the food. I would return perhaps for a B&B break would certainly not visit the restaurant again.

The food in the restaurant was absolutely shocking - cannot believe it promotes itself as a MPW restaurant - I'm sure he would be disgusted with we were served. Completely tasteless prawns - a burnt to the crisp fillet steak (albeit I requested it well done) and some elements of the dish were served stone cold. At breakfast the following morning - my husbands breakfast was again 'cold' and the whilst he was at the buffet selection - the chef was seen to handle & shake the fat off fried eggs & tomatoes with bare hands prior to placing on the plate. The Hotel staff were informed of the issues at the time.

Great experience at this hotel; staff, food and standard of the rooms were great. The only thing I would say is that for my evening meal, I requested some alternative vegetable INSTEAD of the mushrooms that accompanied my beef dish as I can’t eat mushrooms. Upon checking out, we were told there was a £3.50 charge for ‘extra’ peas. It’s only a little thing but it was just a bit excessive to essentially charge us for a spoon full of peas when I wasn’t even asked if I had allergies or not to be told there would be a supplement charge. If it wasn’t for this, it would be 100% positive review. But I do want to stress this is still a great hotel, the food and service was excellent and I would definitely return.
