"The Good: Fabulous breakfast - best fried bread we’ve had for a very long time. Hot breakfast replenished frequently. Dinner very good (except for the desserts which definitely need some improvement!) Cream tea good, nice selection of sandwiches, scones very nice but let down by poor quality strawberry jam and cream. Great selection of good quality Taylor’s teas. The hotel was clean, the grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained. Standard room is adequate, although on the small side, especially for a short break. Hotel is ideally situation for York, Harrogate and all the attractions. However, Wetherby itself is lovely and close by - good selection of restaurants, coffee shops, high quality charity shops and lovely walks by the river. The Bad: Very disappointed we weren’t allowed into Club grade room with dog (NB. it doesn’t say this on website) and they tried to charge us £15/night for the dog in a standard room rather than £15/stay which was what I had been quoted and already pre-paid for (it also states £15 a stay on the website). Room wasn’t made up properly on 2nd night of stay. There are no bins at all outside of property - not ideal if you have a dog with you. They charge residents £15 to use the spa! Restaurant service on the first evening very poor due to 2 untrained foreign staff serving us, one of which could hardly speak English and tried to give us the sorbet course again after our main meal instead of a dessert! Shame we didn’t accept it, though - the desserts were very poor quality. Very slow to replenish cold breakfast items."

Overview

The Bridge Hotel & Spa is in the hamlet of Walshford in North Yorkshire. The hotel is said to stand exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh, so it's not surprising that there is a 17th-century coaching inn at the core of the hotel building. Today, the property is five minutes' drive from the A1(M) and is "well-connected" (The AA) for day trips.

The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Wetherby, home to Wetherby Racecourse, which hosts racedays from October to July. Bramham Park -- a sprawling wooded estate with an 18th-century manor -- is a 15-minute drive away.

You can also drive 15 minutes to Knaresborough and see Mother Shipton's Cave or the ruined 14th-century castle, or venture 30 minutes by car to spend the day at Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey or Lightwater Valley theme park. The nightlife of Leeds, the spa town of Harrogate and historic York -- "the North's most compelling city", according to Rough Guides -- are also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. The North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks are 40 minutes' drive away.

The hotel boasts a spa with an outdoor hot tub, two saunas, an ice fountain and a steam room (spa access is £15 per person for three hours and must be pre-booked). The cosy bar is adorned with oak panelling dating back 250 years, and the restaurant serves classic British dishes. Wi-Fi is free.

The inclusive 5 course dinner was good and nicely served. The breakfast was well cooked but let down by the use of cheap jams and sauces.

There was an attempt in the restaurant and bar to make the place look smart, but this was let down by the grubby doors to the main rooms and corridors. The Reception area looked stark and hence not very welcoming. Not the fault of the hotel but an overpowering smell of pig manure coming from outside did not help

Overall verdict: In my opinion this is NOT a 4* hotel (we regularly stay in 4* hotels) and I struggle to understand how the rating was achieved. However, it is very much better than many 3* hotels we’ve stayed at. To charge residents to use the spa is not something I would expect in a hotel of this standard. The hotel itself and public rooms are well kept and the restaurant is spacious and nicely laid out - food is better value in the restaurant and a much more pleasant dining experience than in the Byron bar. The hotel sits a lovely setting in a good location. A little bit more staff supervision and training by management would provide a much better customer experience. Whilst they accept dogs, allowing them into most public rooms except for the restaurant doesn’t qualify it as ‘dog friendly’. The grounds are great for dogs BUT there were no dog or any other type of bin to dispose of waste. The £15 charge for dogs supposedly includes a food/water bowl and treats - we didn’t see any evidence of either. I would, however, stay at this hotel again, especially if I had the opportunity of another Travelzoo offer.

Lovely room, cosy and clean which is what guest's do expect. Delightful 5 course dinner, tasty and plenty of it on the 1st night, and a great cream tea on the 2nd day. Both days breakfasts were very nice with perfectly cooked poached eggs and plentiful buffet to accompany. Staff were pleasant and helpful, and we had no complaints whatsoever.
