Overview

Set in vibrant Lower Nob Hill, Hotel Carlton has a penchant for making waves. Built in 1927, the property was once a speakeasy (two brass-lidded evacuation pipes in the lobby were used for throwing away alcohol during police raids). In its present incarnation, the Carlton is a pioneer in the hotel industry’s green movement and was the first US hotel to receive an LEED gold rating.

The Carlton hosts a nightly complimentary wine reception (5:30-6pm) in the lobby, which is elaborately decorated in Indian rugs, velvet sofas and an embellished fireplace. Rooms are just as striking with Moroccan bedside tables, colorful bedspreads and exotic trinkets; it feels like "the kind of apartment that would belong to a globe-trotting bohemian aunt" (Fodor’s). Opt for a pricier room on one of the higher floors for city views and a quieter night's sleep. The on-site restaurant Saha serves tasty Middle Eastern fusion cuisine that dining review website Zagat ranks as “very good to excellent”. Try the salmon baklava, beef kibbeh and the tagines cooked with truffle oil.

On the gritty Tenderloin border, the neighborhood surrounding the hotel isn’t the city’s best, but it’s still within walking distance to Union Square, the California Street cable car and the restaurants along buzzing Polk street.

From the press:
  • "If you're looking for wonderfully cheap, attractive, and clean accommodations and don't mind being in the gritty center of the city, book a room here" -- Frommer’s
  • "The restaurant Saha ('to your health') serves excellent Arabic fusion cuisine for breakfast and dinner" -- Fodor’s

Such a cute hotel, and very accommodating staff. I absolutely loved our room and the decor of the entire place, even the elevators! Comfy and clean beds too! And love their wine upon checkin - it's good stuff.

There's no AC, but you can open the windows to the cold SF air and turn on the fan - that does the trick! If you're worried about noise, whether from the city below or your neighbors beside, maybe just bring a little area fan to whir out the sounds! I didn't have a problem myself, although the manager Theo placed us in a corner room next to the stairs, so we had no neighbors. But I heard from others that the walls are very thin and it's easy to hear your neighbors, especially with your windows in to cool the room. Really I think it depends on if you're a light sleeper, and how much wine you plan to drink haha. An area fan would probably be a safe bet.

The decor is stylish. Lobby staff are friendly. We checked out a day early and they did not charge us for the second night, which was nice.
Other Comments
There was a woman screaming down the hall. Hotel staff did intervene but she did not stop immediately. There was no air conditioning and opening the window was loud. No light in the closet and no refrigerator.

This is an older boutique hotel that is very well kept and comfortable. The restaurant was also very good.
Other Comments
The front desk staff was friendly, but did not have very good "concierge" service.. The one restaurant they recommended (except for their own) was not very good.
