The Grand Hotel & Spa is a 5-star hotel, located close to the train station in the centre of York. The redbrick property was built in 1906 as the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway and was converted into a hotel in 2010.

The hotel is within York's 13th-century city walls, a short stroll from the River Ouse. It is a 10-minute walk to York Minster, the seat of the Archbishop of York and a "true gothic masterpiece", according to Frommer's. Nearby are the Jorvik Viking Centre, a family-friendly attraction where you can experience the sights, sounds and smells of the Viking era, and The Shambles, a narrow old street.

Back at the hotel, Hudson's restaurant serves traditional dishes like dressed crab and Yorkshire parkin, and is "second to none", according to The Daily Mail. Ingredients such as rhubarb, cheese and beef are sourced locally, and ales from the nearby York Brewery are on tap in the adjoining bar. There's also a cosy whisky lounge, which stocks over 125 varieties and holds monthly tastings. Down in the building's old vaults, the spa complex offers a range of treatments. It has a 14-metre heated pool, a Jacuzzi, a dry sauna and a steam room. The spa is open from 6:30am until 10pm (3-9pm on Sundays) and access is free for guests.

High-ceilinged bedrooms help create a "rare sense of roominess for a city centre hotel", says The Daily Telegraph, and the bathrooms have heated floors. Despite the city-centre location, rooms are quiet thanks to double glazing. Wi-Fi and bottled water are free, and the in-room fridge can be filled with minibar items, on request. Upgrade to a Master Suite for complimentary parking and one free in-room movie per stay.
